NDMP support on VNX Simulator

This is just a short question to confirm if the VNX Simulator has support for NDMP. I would like to test some backup application. In most of the cases, a 3-way backup is not supported and this requires at least a tape drive attached to the VM. This is not a big deal and works just fine.

I noticed that server_devconfig ALL -list -scsi -nondisks will just use some static files instead of real device files. The tape device itself was discovered and registered within /dev. As long server_devconfig ALL -create -scsi -nondisks does not create any specific device files, NDMP will not work. Is this expected?

I used Celerra Simulator 7.1.47.5 - 1DM on vSphere ESXi 5.0 for my tests.

Sebastian,

Firstly, consider relocating this question (and all future ones also) to the relevant community for maximum visibility.  Under the users' "Discussions" space, posts can go unnoticed for a while as witnessed by the delay in the first reply.  You can do so by selecting "Move discussion" in the upper-right and for this question, the appropriate community would be:

All Places > Support Community > VNX Family

To answer your question, the VNX simulator can perform 3-way NDMP as it is both control and data being sent over IP (via the virtual cge interface(s) on the data mover) to/from your media server which then dumps the data to the tape library unit - which is connected to the server.

On the other hand, on a physical array, 2-way NDMP is configured with a tape library unit cabled to the data mover via the FC AUX ports (2 on each data mover).  Then the TLU components are discovered and the device name (addresses) recorded.  However, the FC AUX ports are not emulated in the VSA.

Thanks for your reply Christopher. It's always good to know what is expected to work.

Sebastian
