New VNX5300 Install, VMware Multipathing Selection

Hello,

I am installing a second VNX5300 at our other location and setup our ESXi 5.1 hosts to connect for storage.  I am verifying the multipathing policy in vCenter for the LUNS and the drop-down for where you would select Round-Robin or Fixed is blank...no options are available.  Any suggestings why this is happening.  Our first array we are able to select the policy option.  Capture.JPG.jpg

Looking at Hosts>Initiators>Failover Mode is 4.  Assuming that is what you are asking?

I am going to assume that you have PowerPath/VE installed.

With ESXI 5x It will be round robin if using Native MPIO , so will will see IO going on all the paths ., with AULA as FM 4 like some one mentioned.

It is blank for him though.  That is expected if you have PowerPath/VE claiming the devices.

When you start your ESXi host or rescan your storage adapter, the host discovers all physical paths to storage devices available to the host. Based on a set of claim rules, the host determines which multipathing plug-in (MPP) should claim the paths to a particular device and become responsible for managing the multipathing support for the device. This continues until all physical paths are claimed by corresponding MPPs, either third-party multipathing plug-ins, such as PowerPath or the native multipathing plug-in (NMP).

For the paths managed by the NMP module, a second set of claim rules is applied. These rules determine which Storage Array Type Plug-In (SATP) should be used to manage the failover paths for a specific array type, and which Path Selection Plug-In (PSP) is to be used for each storage device path selection.

For the paths managed by PowerPath, all the claim rules are controlled by PP. And PSP and SATP would be unavailable consequently.

On your screenshot, the PSP and SATP are all unset, so I think we need to first figure out what MPP are owning these paths. Check on your vSphere client referring to below illustration.

Agreed.  However, if you right click on the LUN you have circled and select "Manage Paths", you will see the same thing as the op.

sjk, hi, have you checked out the path owner?

As far as I know, EMC Best practices for ESX multipathing says that Fixed mode (setting Preferred path) should be set with Failover Mode 4 (ALUA).
