not able to discover/initialize VNX 5300

Hello guys,

I'm initializing a vnx5300 and I'm following step-by-step the installation guide.

I've cabled everything and as per guide powered on the SPA-B and waited for 15 minutes.

Leds are fine (solid green, no amber led).

I've connected SPA MGMT and SPB MGMT cables to a switch and I did the same for the CS0 MGMT.

Then I've connected my laptop to the same switch and verified that all the ports were on the same vlan.

Despite this  usint the inittool or the InitToolcli or the Unisphere storage system initialization wizard I am not able to get a result from the discover..

I've seen there are some KBAs regarding this issue but they talk about Cisco Security Agent or other software that I don't have in my laptop.

I've cabled like pics at page 30 of this installation guide:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2822148/Saiv/VNX5300_Block.pdf

Indeed I can ping the ip address of the SPx from my pc:

C:\>ping 128.221.252.200 -t

What's wrong in what I'm doing?

I guess I should power on the SPA-B before and initialize them with the ip of my vlan (changin them from 128.221.xxx.xxx to 192.168.xxx.xxx) and then power on the CS0. Is this correct? am I missing something with this vnx?

thanks in advance for your help

Are you running VNX Installation Assistant from the same subnet as the one in which your storage system is connected?

yes.. same vlan, same switch, same subnet (128....)

but anyway I should see the storage at layer 2 right? I should see it via mac-address.. correct?

tnx

You are using VNX Installation Assistant for configuring the IP - correct? You should be able to see the Control Station MAC address in the VIA screen.

There might be some network issues which could be preventing you from discoverng the VNX system. Another option is to connect the laptop (running VIA) directly to the control station and try to discover the storage system. Attached is an old document which was written for running Celerra Startup Assistant (CSA) with Celerra systems. You can use this for VNX systems also.

hi Avi,

thanks a lot for your reply.

Actually I am using Unisphere Initialization Utility for Block as per documentation or also Unisphere Storage System initialization.

Anyway tomorrow I will have the vnx again in front of me in my lab and I will try again following the procedure you've suggested.

I will let you know.

thanks

I would suggest to open a service request

It’s a lot easier to solve this via a SR where support can quickly get information about the environment vs. back and forth on the forum

I have had some issues with things like this.

Once I had to turn every adapter off in my "Network Connections" screen, I had many because I have VMware workstation installed. Once I did that, I only re-enabled my primary ethernet adapter (I had wireless off as well) and it found it right away. The initialization program seems to be odd when it chooses what IP and adapter it uses so I limited its choices. Also everytime you make a change make sure you restart the initizliation program or else it will keep trying with the older settings.

Hope this helps a little.

Turns out Mcafee firewall should have been disabled
