RAID layout in a Storage Pool (code 32)

Folks,

With the new version of code 32 what's the best choice for creating a storage pool with an "odd" number of drives?

Here is a screenshot of the possible RAID selection.

Specifically I'm wondering if you have 8 drives and want to create a RAID5 pool is it best to select RAID5 (8+1)?  If so will it create a RAID Group in the pool using 7+1?  Is that bad?  What happens if you want to grow the pool, should you group it by 8 drives again so it creates another RAID Group at 7+1?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Great thanks Thomas!

Let me ask this then.  What if your original pool is RAID5(8+1) but with only 8 drives (7+1) and the next time you add 9 drives, obviously the pool can use all 9 and create a (8+1) RG.  What are the concenquences and are there any performance impacts or possible issues (say data loss in the future)?

I would expect some sort of warning msg appears to warn you of what will happen. I'm sure if customers end up creating (7+1) RGs, almost all of them WILL make the mistake you just told us
