Question: What is the correct procedure for powering down a CX3-series array?
Environment: Product: CLARiiON CX3-series
Fix:

Follow these steps:

  1. Generate a set of SPcollect files before powering down the CX3-series array.

  2. Stop all I/O to the array.

  3. Wait approximately 5 minutes to allow the write cache to finish its writing to the storage system. Writes may not be completed but following this step will ensure data integrity.

  4. Turn off the SPS power switch on each SPS.

WARNING! Never turn off the power directly to the SPE chassis or the OS-Boot chassis by using any switches on the power supplies. Never unplug any of the AC cables going to the SPE or OS-Boot chassis to disconnect power.

  5. As soon as the second SPS is turned off, any data in the SP (cached data) will be saved to the vault drives.

  6. When the saving of the cached data from the SP is completed (in about 90 seconds), the SPS units will power off by themselves, thus removing power to the SPE chassis and the OS-Boot chassis.

  7. Once Step 6 is complete and the SPS units and the power supplies connected to them have turned off, any other chassis can be turned off by using the power supply switches or by removing cables from their AC source.
Notes:

The only power switches that should be used to shut down a CLARiiON CX-series array (SPE/OS-boot chassis or DPE) are the power switches on the standby power supplies (SPS).
The CX3-20, CX3-40, and CX3-80 SPE chassis and OS-boot chassis are plugged into the SPS units. From the rear of the cabinet, the left power supply of each chassis (SPE and OS-Boot) is plugged into the left SPS and the right power supplies are plugged into the right SPS.

reverse the order to power up

sp collect logs are a bunch of logs collected from each storage processor that help EMC support analyzer what's going on with the array.  You can not use SP collects to rebuild Clariion. There is a navicli command that can capture how array is configured but it will not recover any data if for example you deleted a LUN or raid group.

Thanks for your answer, to add to it, i jus have a quick question what exactly the SP Collect logs contain. Are they the configuration files for the clarion where i can use later to build the complete array in case the clariion goes down.
