I went ahead and removed the unbound disk from the DAE one morning. Besides the event generated in Event Logs (and the email we received about a disk being taken offline), there were no issues. In the afternoon, I used that disk to replace the faulty disk. Again, no issues there. Re-balancing started straightaway and array is healthy again.

If it is unbound,you can do anything to this disk.
