Sample data throughput benchmarks?

I have some concerns about the storage performance of our VNX SAN's and cannot seem to find any real world performance numbers concerning IOPS or even better throughput.  I realize there are tons of variables involved but any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Our current setup is a purely virtualized environment hosted by vSphere 5.0 with VNX5300 SANS.  Storage is provisioned as NFS, and storage network is isolated on its own subnet connected via dual 1Gb portchannels.  One of the NFS volumes is a RAID 5 array using SAS 10K 500GB drives.

Again, I know that every configuration is unique but any ballpark figures would at least give me something to go by.

Thanks,

Not sure I am going to answer this correctly, but the RAID 5 array is listed under Storage Pools for File.

are those NFS file systems seat on top of dedicated raid group or storage pools (block storage pools, not datamover pools)

hmm..i am trying to get more specifics .  What i am thinking is to identify how NFS file systems are laid out, looks at LUN IOPS, figure out what raid groups/storage pool is being used by these LUNs and then look at disk statistics, see how many IOPS are they being asked to handle.

The setup appears to utilize to RAID groups as nothing is listed under storage pools.  One RAID group consists of two luns, and the other four.  I can provide stats for whichever you want.

Thanks,

To start off, you may want to read over the best practices of performance.

Please mark my answer as correct/helpful answer if it helps.

before we dive into detail, do you have UnisphereAnalyzer installed on your array ? You can check by right clicking on your array, software tab.

So from host (ESX) perspective have you looked at any datastore performance metrics, for example Datastores. I am looking in C# client under Performance Tab > Switch to Datastore. That graph shows response time in milliseconds. What do you see ?

Have you received complains from clusters about slow response times ?

Will try to get you a definitive answer regarding Analyzer in the morning, but I want to say yes because I have been through the process of generating NAR files.

On my vSphere 5.0 Client when I go to Performance -> Datastore I get the response time, but only for the internally attached storage of the host.  If I check the performance of Datastores attached to my VM I get the metrics.  Here is a sample:

Yes I have received complaints.  Concerning the best practices mentioned above, we paid an EMC integrator a lot of money to setup the SANs but I am finding issues that lead me to believe we did not get the best advice.  Again, any sample numbers from anyone would be very helpful.
