SNMP vs email notifications

Question

Hello,

I'm trying to straighten out our VNX notifications. Does anyone still use SNMP traps anymore? Emails seem to much more readable and manageable. I would like to stick to email, just need to be sure of the events I can expect to receive. I do receive disk failure alerts from email without setting up any specials notifications in Unisphere. Will I automatically get all notifications from block and file? what is the best way to setup and test email notifications? Is it all in /nas/sys/nas_eventlog.cfg?

Take a look at the EMC document, Configuring Events and Notifications on VNX for File. This covers how to configure all of the notifications from the Control Station. By subscribing to other hardware categories, you can get block events as well.

I'm using both SNMP and email alerts, with different alerts going to each category. Email alerts go to our data center NOC and storage team, while lots of esoteric alerts go to our Access Management team (filesystem capacities, quotas, etc.) and performance (CPU, memory) SNMP traps just go to me.

In my case, no. :-) I send these SNMP traps to our management station, which allows me to track and trend them over extended periods of time. If I received them via email, I'd have to keep the email around or put them in a spreadsheet or notebook.
