I thought it might pick-up an IP that way, so my mistake. I've already verified the cabling and firewall ect... and I'm still unable to get the VIA to see the VNX. I've now connected a crossover cable, and I still can't get it to find the array.
Is there a default subnet the VNX is configured for?
for a new VNX5200, there is no default subnet, you could try to connect to the control station via the serial port and check if you can see the waiting for the VIA...you will perhaps need to restart the CS.
I can't even get console access. I'm using the following: port settings are 115200 baud, Data Bits 8, Stop Bits 1, Parity None, Flow Control hardware.
I think I need to reboot the system, but being that I don't have access the only way would be to bring it down hard, which is unplugging the power cables. Is this correct? I don't want to damage the array, but I'm left with no other options.
I confirmed the terminal settings as you listed and no go. I went ahead and rebooted the CS hard and I still can't connect. I've contacted EMC twice about having somebody assist, and I still can't get somebody to call me back, email me, or come on-site. I just get to the front people regarding the tickets, they update the notes and that's as far as I get.
Also, why are all my posts getting moderated? It makes the response times greater than 8 hours for each post. I don't understand why legitimate questions are getting flagged. I read another post about this, and it was because it was tripping spam settings.
Are all my posts going to be like this? Makes troubleshooting and learning on here very difficult, and short lived. I hope that can be lifted.
So the picture you attached, that's not what mine looks like. I'm connecting directly to the VNX array on the serial port with a wrench symbol. The other serial connector looks like a battery symbol.
I won't be getting a call back, as it has been denied for support. They want to charge be an on-site PS engagement which is an additional cost that I can't get approved. I'm on my own on this one.
I called support and opened a ticket. It got assigned to a tech, but when he found out this was a new build he dumped the ticket and it got closed. So I called support again and explained my situation and they sent the ticket out to the the field. This happened twice, as the first time nobody followed up with me so had to call again to confirm it got sent out. Then my account rep emailed me asking about setting up the PS engagement.
I must say the XtremIO support was great, I had no issues when I had a OS build issue. But the VNX support team is pretty bad, I just can't get somebody to assist.
There's two parts to the VNX5200 - the Control Station and the Block side. What you're connecting to is the Block side of the array. When the block side is first booted the serial port will display a BIOS-like output. Once the Block has booted, it switches to a different configuration and you need to establish a PPP connection to the port. You want to connect to the Control Station serial port.
I believe this is for a Unified setup, and I only have the Block setup. So I don't think a CS will be used for a Block setup. That's what I'm getting from the EMC sales rep, but I'm not sure if that's 100% accurate. Regardless, it still concerns me that I can't get simple console access to the block. But maybe I'm not supposed to.
I've now downloaded and installed Unisphere, but it's prompting me for a login to a hostname or IP. But that's where I'm confused, how do you get the hostname or IP of the array to connect to it? EMC will no longer assist, as this has to be a PS engagement for an install, but I can't get approval for that with upper management. So I'm stuck.
I grabbed the Unisphere InitTool and was able to find the VNX on the network. Thank you all for letting me voice out my issues, and for you that took the time to help. Much appreciated!

VNX does NOT use DHCP to assign an IP address
On a system fresh from the factory it will listen on the network for broadcasts and wait for VIA to configure it
Please use the knowledgebase on support.emc.com common VIA install problems (cabling, firewall, …)

please use:
bits per second: 19200
data bits: 8
parity: None
stop bit: 1
flow control: None
Telnet terminal ID: ANSI.
and if no success, you can try by rebooting the CS (hard way)
