VNX5400/storage pool question

This is similar to thread/225302 when asking about mixing drive types within a TIER of a Storage Pool, but different architecture on the VNX.

I have a VNX5400 (05.33.008.5.119) and want to expand a storage pool that currently has:

  • Extreme: (5) drives RAID5(4+1) on FLASH VP
  • Performance: (24) drives RAID10 (4+4) on 900GB 10k SAS

But, I now want to start using 1.2TB 10k SAS drives instead, and use fewer drives as I expand now, and in the future.

From the best practice doc, it states

  • For example, AVOID mixing 600GB 10K SAS drives in the same pool with 300GB 15K SAS drives; instead, split them into 2 different pools

I understand the mixing of different drive types, but what happens when I mix 2 drive types that are very close like in the above scenario?

Any other best practices to follow, or that this would violate?

Are there support issues?

Loss of usable space 1200-900 for each drive added?

Performance issues?

Any other concerns?

Thanks.
