I guess a "guarantee" would include only CPUs that Dell has sold/supported in the 260. It's kind of tough since Dell has removed the documentation, but if this website is to be believed (?), the CPUs listed there should all have support in the BIOS. HardwareCorner lists "Best CPUs" for an upgrade, but it's hard to know whether their recommendation is based on actual experience with this system. This community poster with hands-on experience got i7-2600 working in a 260s.

So, if I understand it properly, it was born with Sandy Bridge, and it will die with Sandy Bridge.
That blows. Every other motherboard based on Intel chipsets will run with any CPU made within the same Tick-Tock cycle except for (apparently) Dell motherboards. Well, looks like I now gotta buy a Sandy Bridge CPU.
The Dell Vostro 260 supports Gen2 Intel Core technology. Intel introduced their second generation micro architecture named Sandy Bridge in 2011. The maximum number of cores is 6 (on an i7 processor). Desktops use the 1155 LGA socket and DDR3-1066 RAM. The second generation of Intel Core is old but still sufficient for office, home tasks and retro gaming. If you plan to enjoy more recent games, a more recent CPU is required.
Best CPU for you : Core i7 2700K but you need 350-400 PSU.
