i have dell vostro 2520 laptop. it has processor Intel i5 3rd generation chip in it., can i upgrade the cpu and upto which cpu can upgrade (i5, i7)?

The i5 is the fastest CPU this system shipped with.
Whether you can upgrade to a third-gen (i7-3xxx) CPU i7 is open to question, but if you decide to try:
Make sure it draws no more than 35W (a 45W CPU won't work),
Stick to dual-core CPUs (quads and Extreme likely won't work).
