Upgrading Vostro 3478 with ssd

I want upgrade my Vostro 3478 with a 240gb SSD..after alot research and expeert advise came to know that I can do it and it shall enhance the laptops performance. however there is a step where in we have to replace the hdd with ssd and we can put that hdd in the cd drive with the help of a tool called caddy and we can also do it vice versa that we can install the SSD in the cd drive with caddy and the transfer speed shall be the same but only on one condition that sata port should be sata 3...so can you pls confirm whether the hdd and cd drive both ports are sata 3

Hello,

My Dell Vostro 3478 came with 4 GB Ram and 1 TB HDD - so I added another RAM 4 GB module from Crucial and it showed 30% improvement in speed. My vostro is more than 2 years old now so is boot time. I'm changing my 1 TB HDD with Crucial SSD 250 and I tried using my friend's SSD and it's just awesome. My take on this get SSD 250/500 GB along with RAM and your Laptop will feel better than a new one - Total Investment to upgrade will be 2000 Rs for 4GB Ram and 5200 for 500GB SSD i.e with 7500 Rs you are giving a new life to your laptop at least for a minimum of 2-3 years.

My answer to your question is - Why will you add a secondary SSD when your OS boots up from OLD HDD which will not make much of a difference in my opinion. You can always back up your files in an external device and then after installing in your primary SSD you can restore.

BTW I have also heard that you can place an SSD in place of your CD/DVD drive. I'm not sure if that will be worth it. But again your call - you know best what you should be doing.

Best,

Hi Sandeep,

Thank you for your reply, really appreciate it....here is what I did...I have a dell Vostro 3478 with In built 4 gb ram & 1 tb hdd....I bought a 250gb SSD (Kingston) along with the caddy and took the risk & Installed the 250gb SSD In the cd drive with the help of caddy...& Touch wood fortunately the laptop is running with hors e power...it doesn't seem its i3... everything works on a single click with instant response also I am not facing any lag or slow speed or heat up  issues...I aslo clonned my OS on the ssd with help of a free software named Minitool partition...its working absolutely terrific.
