VOSTRO 3450 Upgrade (RAM+SSD) fail
Hello,
For friends I try to update the very old vostro 3450 :
1- I replace 4Gb RAM with new 8Gb RAM
2- I replace old 750Gb HDD by a SSD 128Gb (port Sata1)
3- I replace DVD player by cart with the old 750Gb HDD inside (port Sata2 optical)
4- I replace mainboard battery
5- I replace the laptop battery
6- I upgrade from BIOS A07 to A13
7- Last I install clean Windows 8.1 (all devices are recognize)
Now if I boot (1st boot) it goes very fast. Everything is very smooth.
The problem comes if I reboot or I shutdown the laptop : It take more than 10min with blank screen (you don't see anything on it except that you know that the laptop is still ON). Why??..... :((
I try this : I remove the cart with the old 750Gb HDD inside (port Sata2 optical) and it become normal again. Start fast, reboot and shutdown fast.
Someone understand this please ?? I really need to use the cart with the old 750Gb HDD inside (port Sata2 optical) for this laptop.

Ok I finally put back the cart with the origin HDD 750Gb + install WIN10 on it. Now exept REBOOT and SHUTDOWN it run pretty fast. (Adobe illustrator 2019 "alomost" fly on it!)
@ejn63 Thanks for suggestion but as I told I install Ubuntu on it (just to test) Start Reboot and Shutdown it all good. The problem is like more Windows and this laptop (Bios....).
Its about a bit more 4-5min to wait. And I am sure my friends will easily compose with it.

Try a different caddy for the hard drive -- they are third party devices and subject to incompatibility. Or, mount the hard drive in a USB enclosure and use it externally.
You may also want to run a thorough diagnostic on that hard drive using its manufacturer's utility. If it's anywhere near the age of that system, it's well beyond its design life and could be failing -- which could be the cause of the issue.

Hello @U2CAMEB4ME Thanks !
Have you formated the old HDD???
Yes I format after backup (disk USB) everything of course.
I do belive you can use DISKPART to just remove the "Active" flag from the partition.
I do more than that : I completely erase the partition.
Update : I just check and all partitions are correct. And I forget to tell that I make a try with Ubuntu. All really fine : just boot and reboot with the cart + HDD no problemo.

I realize that the laptop might be dead by now. But you could've tried checking the caddy for a small switch, it will usually be in a very small hole in the front. If there is one then change it to the other direction. This will fix the issue.
If there isn't then well, you know what kind of caddy to buy the next time.
