Vostro 5320 - Microphone issues
Hello,
I'm just wondering if there are any known issues with this model and the microphone? We have around 19 of these laptops and it now looks like the microphone on the third one has stopped working. I've gone as far as doing a fresh Windows install and the issue remains. There doesn't seem to be much info on the model when searching so I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced issues with the microphone on theirs?
When you try to do a mic test using the built in sound recorder, the input on the wave graph just shoots up to the max and stays there, then when playing back there is nothing. Usually the sound will go up or down depending on what is detected. I've ran driver updates, bios updates and Windows updates, but none of this has helped. I also uninstalled all sound devices from the device manager, then rebooting the system so it installs the basic drivers, but this also doesn't help. The fact I've done a clean install of Windows should eliminate any driver issue.
To me, this seem like a hardware issue. From having a quick look, it appears that the camera and mic are part of the same board. Can this be easily replaced, or is it soldered in place?

Click here for troubleshooting and resolving the mic issue on your laptop.
To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them. Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

We have a fleet of 10 of these machines out and 4 of the microphones have failed.
I have replaced the camera module on one of them with a new one. No dice. Tried downgrading the driver to an older version and that did not work either.

@Beardforce Thanks for that info. It's interesting that you replaced the camera module and it still didn't fix it. I was wondering if the camera/mic had some sort of firmware updates that could maybe be rolled back or updated, but it doesn't seem like it from what I can see. I'm also going to try look through the event viewer to see if that is picking anything up.

@Martinio Update! I have confirmed the issue to be the LVDS cable on all of the units that have failed by swapped a known working screen to the affected units. Unfortunately these LCD cables are still unobtanium, They are available for the Latitude 5320 but not the Vostro. Dell, Ebay and Aliexpress show up 0 results for this part.

Update. I managed to track down the LVDS cable and fix all 4 units that had microphone issues.
Here is the link to the part, There is a choice of 4, "0JXD21" is the correct one for the Vostro 5320.
