Vostro 5490 with which Dock?

Hi All

I have a Vostro 5490 and want to get a dock for it.  I currently have a WD15 Dock - but I believe it is not Compatible as when I plug it in, i get a charging warning (Despite being told when I purchased the laptop that the dock would work).

Would the D6000 Dock work fine, or is there another that i need? Do I need to get a D6000 dock with a 180w power adaptor?

Only using it to plug k/b and mouse + 2 screens.

Cheers

@FionaL  Ok, then it sounds like either your dock unit or its power supply is malfunctioning.  If you had another of either, you'd be able to narrow it down and potentially purchase a replacement for only one component (although a standalone WD15 dock unit would have to be purchased through a third party since Dell doesn't sell them without power adapters), but if not and you're considering a whole new dock and power supply, I would recommend the WD19 over the D6000 as long as you don't plan to use a display setup more advanced than dual 1080p.  There are two reasons for this:

  • The D6000 only supplies 60W, whereas your system is designed for 65W.  Some earlier Dell systems wouldn't throw a warning about this minor shortfall, but newer ones seem to do so, and seeing a warning at boot time and within Windows about an undersized power source would get old fast.  The WD19 130W version can pass up to 90W through to the attached system.
  • Whereas the WD15, WD19, and most other docks tap into native GPU outputs, the D6000 uses "indirect display" technology called DisplayLink (not to be confused with DisplayPort).  That comes with some drawbacks that can be significant in some people's use cases.  I wrote about those in detail in the post marked as the answer in this thread.  The only reason I'd suggest even considering the D6000 in your case would be if you wanted to be able to run a more advanced display setup than dual 1080p.  In that case, the D6000's method of handling video becomes an advantage, because it means it can handle dual displays up to 4K 60 Hz plus a third display at up to 4K 30 Hz.  Your system doesn't offer enough native GPU bandwidth over its regular USB-C port for that, which is why you're limited to dual 1080p when using the WD15 and WD19 -- although again, these docks won't come with the potential drawbacks of DisplayLink.  And your system doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, which would have allowed access to more native GPU bandwidth.  If it did, you could have used a dock like the WD19TB to run dual displays up to 4K 60 Hz or triple QHD displays while still avoiding DisplayLink's drawbacks.

@FionaL  A few questions:

  • What is the exact charger warning?
  • What is the wattage of the AC adapter that came with your Vostro 5490?  It will be printed on the underside of the adapter.  From checking Dell's product page it looks like 65W?
  • How many displays are you running and what resolution(s) are they?

The D6000 is unlikely to be any better, because the WD15 (when properly functioning, anyway) can supply up to 90W or 130W of power to Dell systems depending on whether the WD15 itself is powered by a 130W or 180W AC adapter.  The D6000 can only supply 60W.  There's a newer WD19 dock, but it can't supply any more power except to non-Dell systems, where it can offer up to 90W whereas the WD15 only provides 60W.

So if you're seeing a power warning, it might just be an issue with the dock, its power adapter, or the cable.  If the product page for the Vostro 5490 is correct that it comes with a 65W adapter, then the WD15 should be able to supply that even if you only have 130W version.  Again, the exact charger warning might be useful here.

Hi

Thanks for your reply,

The error that comes up is "Slow USB Charger Connected"

The Dock is currently being charged by a 130w power supply. I have had this dock for sometime and might suspect that that there is a problem with the dock or the power supply unit. The Vostro power supply is a 65w

I am only currently running one 22in display at 1080 x 1920.  The second display (will be the the same size and resolution.

As my Vostro is new, i am happy to purchase a new dock, but want to check to see if the standard D6000 would be adequate to supply the Vostro.

Cheers

Hi @jphughan

Thanks for the awesomely detailed answer. Based on your reply I have decided to go for the WD19.  The 2 x 22" monitors are native 1080p, and are fine for my business needs.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Cheers

Fiona
