0x07B Error on Startup

I first had an issue where I received a missing or corrupt file error for windows/system32/config/system.

It seemed that I was able to correct the error by copying a new config\system file in windows recovery, and I no longer received the same error. Now I get a blue screen with the following error string:

0x0000007B (0xBA4C3524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I have tried the following so far:
Removing all USB and Network connections before booting
Booting in safe mode - does not boot, shows a listing of files then automatically reboots
Booting to last configuration that worked - does not boot
Running chkdsk /p and /r - finds an error and states its corrected but still does not allow me to boot

It seems this error has been linked to the BIOS in some instances, which I did change in order to boot from a CD when I fixed the first error in windows recovery but I have since changed that back to the default order.

Others link the error to a virus that may have invaded a sector (I have no idea what that really means), but I am not sure how I can remove a virus when I am unable to boot windows up.

Additionally I do receive a rear fan failure at start-up, obviously because my fan does not work, but I am assuming this is unrelated to the 0x0 error and is not what is stopping me from booting up since I can ignore the alert.

I currently am running windows XP on an XPS dimension 4.

I have searched high and low, but nothing seems to address my issue.  All I really want to do is to be able to recover pictures of my son on my computer if I can't get Windows back up and running.  If I can do that I can just wipe the HD and install again if I have to with no worries.

Any help would be appreciated.

sinos, if you're having this kind of error try doing this one. When you see the "DELL" screen tap F12 so that you could go to boot options menu. look for "IDE HARD DRIVE DIAGNOSTICS". select this one and the computer will start testing your Hard Drive(HD). You're HD might be failing(it will give you an error code if it failed the test). And to give you an additional information this error code that you are getting might be caused by a hardware failure or by two controllers that are conflicting with each other, so if you installed any hardware in your computer try removing that one first. You're also correct when you mentioned that a virus corrupted the MBR or boot files. And since you already did the "chkdsk /r or /p" there's no point in doing that again. If your HD will pass the test I suggest that you back up your files first because the last option might be reinstalling Windows(everything will be deleted). rj

Sinos >> To recover your photos is the easiest thing: just connect your hdd to another system as a secondary hdd and you can save the pictures. You can do this if the hdd is OK.

To solve your problem try to read the links at http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x7b

Do NOT reformat your hdd before you get the photos, otherwise they are lost forever.

Looks like things are just getting worse each time I boot my computer.  Before reading your response I tried to run chkdsk again and it went through it OK, but when I restarted the comp made all sorts of beeping noises and I got an error stating no hard drive is not recognized.

I spoke to some friends locally that are much more technically sound that I and one proposed booting using linux and extracting data to an external drive.

Seems like the HD is now, so I will have to leave it in the hands of someone that knows as much as you guys.

Thanks for your responses.  I guess all I can do now is hand it off and pray.
