1521 running xp ? sm bus controller

I bought 2 Inspiron 1521 laptops - was told by Dell they would run XP and W2k just fine. Only prob is no drivers! I gave up on W2k (will run virtual), but found the drivers for XP after spending about 3 days looking. I have 2G ram, Radeon 1250 or 1270 video (depending upon whether you look at the shipping slip or on the computer. Got all loaded in Dell prescribed order, seems to run nicely, including wireless and camera and MediaDirect, but still have the ? SM bus controller in Device Manager (this never shows up on Vista, even before loading drivers). After much internet searching, and no help from Dell tech service, (and reloading both Vista and XP several times), I found that it could be Chipset. The only Chipset provided for this computer is the Ricoh driver for the Card Reader. So I found the chipset driver for the AMD Turion 64 on the ATI site, and installed that on one. It works nicely, but still have the ?. What's the story? Can I disable this? What am I missing? Should I just give up and buy some nice used Lenovos with XP and W2k?

Whoohoo! Worked perfectly! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our IT guy gave up on these computers 2 weeks ago (told me to send them back), and I've been struggling ever since. Too bad Dell made this a scavenger hunt. I guess I'll buy some mice and carry bags now. You don't suppose that Dell will come out with the Quickset app to make the F keys work, do you? I don't miss them much, as I can close the lid for sleep mode, and I have the battery indicator in the notification area, and the screen brightness works fine. I ran some searches, and all the Quicksets I found were for Vista. As I said, not a big deal. I'll just keep checking to see what shows up. Thanks again. Have a nice weekend.

Do you think the D531 XP versions of Dell Notebook System Software and the AMD Processor driver will work for the 1521?

That is what this thread is about, yes they work for XP installed on the 1521.

Hi,  I am "downgrading" my Inspiron from Vista to XP due to dismal performance.  Can you share where you found the drivers?  I am not able to find any of them on the Dell site.

Thanks,

svchost.exe can be used by any program, so it is cloked by windows as to what is actually using this service. It is usually a 3rd party security software that causes this. Disable any add on programs one at a time to find the culprit.

Here is the latest ATI driver for the X1250

This machine is an Inspiron 1521 w/ 2GB, 160HD, ATI Radion Xpress 1270 Video card, AMD Turion 64.  Performance was abysmal.  Tried to install XP.  All worked OK, but I was not able to fine an XP driver for the video card.

Vista performance problem was caused by SVCHOST.EXE consuming 40-50 ++ percent of CPU when machine was at rest - fresh boot, no apps running.  Ran like my old 386.

Any ideas?
