A couple glitches with my Internet Explorer browser.
There are a couple specific problems I am currently having with IE6.
1. When I tried to attach some files to my (Yahoo) email message, I instead got a message indicating that it was an "invalid file".
2. I was also not getting a response when clicking on a CNET web page sign-in button after entering my user ID and password.
In a reply I got from Yahoo customer support they suggested that it may be my browser or it's security settings and recommended some corrective measures. This got me to thinking about trying another browser I have installed, so I opened Firefox and tried the same tasks. Sure enough, both problems went away. I was able to attach any files to my Yahoo mail, and I was able to sign in to the CNET page.
Now for these problems with my IE6. I tried Yahoo's suggestions of lowering the security settings and confirming that Java script was enabled, but neither has corrected the problems.
Question #1 - Does anyone have any idea how to correct these IE
problems? (settings adjustments ?, re-installation?)
When I looked to see how to uninstall IE, the directions simply steered me to start/control panel/add-remove programs, but I couldn't find IE listed as a program to remove, although I'm obviously running it. I did find it in my program files, but it wouldn't allow deletion because it said it was in use. In any event, I did see where it said when it was uninstalled it would simultaneously be replaced with the earlier addition of IE that was previously
installed. Sounds like MS has made it difficult to uninstall IE completely.
Question #2 - a. How do you uninstall IE6 (so you can re-install to perhaps

b. How do you uninstall IE completely, no matter what
version it is or used to be?

- Are you using your computer as an administrator or in user mode?
- What security setting do you have in your privacy settings (Tools | Internet Options | Privacy tab)? Medium? If not, try setting it to that (it's the default in a new browser).
- In the content tab, click the "Auto Complete" button. Click the "clear forms" button. You might want to also click the "Clear passwords" button, too.
- On the "General" tab, click "Delete Cookies".
- On the "General" tab, click "Delete Files". Checkmark "Delete all offline content" and click OK.
Restart IE and try again.
Hopefully flushing out some of cached data will fix the problem.

Thanks for the reply KissFan...
If I'm not mistaken, I'm logged into my computer as "owner", not "administrator" or "user".
I tried all your cache clearing and privacy setting changes, including clearing passwords and forms, but unfortunately they had no affect on the problem. I am still getting "invalid file" (for all files) when I attempt to attach files to email.
I'm a bit puzzled about your statement about the inability to remove IE....even about the difficulty of "switching it off". Something doesn't sound kosher if Microsoft has indeed deliberately constructed a situation like that...shame on them.

Actually here's how to 'uninstall' IE..
- Go to Control Panel
- Double click "Add or Remove Programs"
- Click on "Add/Remove Windows components" on the left side of the Window.
- Uncheck "Internet Explorer".
- Click "Next"
- Follow remaining prompts.
Now, this doesn't really uninstall IE... IE is actually used by Windows Explorer. Also Windows Update (Start | All Programs | Windows Update) requires IE to work. Also various sites "function better" with IE rather than Firefox (sad fact I'm afraid).
As for something not being Kosher - you're right - and in fact MS does make distributions of XP that have no IE in them for distribution in counties that require it.
Me, per se, I don't have anything really against IE. I just prefer Firefox and I think it's a more stable browser.

Interestingly, my Internet Explorer box was already unchecked, but it's because I've tried that maneuver before. I can not detect any difference whatsoever between having the box checked, or unchecked. The Installation Wizard goes through a brief operation in each case, but the outcome seems to be the same, so I don't know how that qualifies as an "uninstall", but thanks for the recommendation nonetheless.
I did notice that the memory space occupied by IE in the Accessory/component box was 0.00. Don't know if that has any significance or not.

On getting your last reply I re-read my last post and it struck me that I should have proofed it before sending....the reason being that I did not make it explicit and clear that;
1. The 0.0 memory usage figure was displayed whether or not I checked the component box(and after completing the installation/un-installation wizards). I thought maybe it would affect the memory figure after it was checked and installed.
2. Although I found the IE component checkbox already unchecked when I first looked, I tried checking and activating/installing IE (more than once, actually)and I could not detect any difference in IE's function, whether or not it was checked in the component box.....that didn't seem to make any sense either.

I have another question for you. Did you, by any chance, install IE7 on this machine?
Also, do you have any spyware blockers or McAfee Security Center running by any chance? Another thing... Is the Yahoo Quick Select Tool listed in Add or remove programs? If it is, try uninstalling it.
Just a few WAGs based on my Googling around a bit.. ;)

What's your excuse for being awake at this hour...I don't have any rational ones myself..hah!
Okay...
1. Would you believe I'm so old I can't remember with absolute certainty, but I'm pretty sure I installed an IE7 Beta several weeks ago, but quickly removed it...(with difficulty back then also). I seem to remember searching around the Internet for a way to get rid of it because of some immediate problems I had with it.
2. I have "Spyware Doctor" activated when I'm booted. As for McAfee, while I don't have it installed in my computer I do have a Comcast cable connection and I noticed fairly recently that they somehow utilize McAfee with their system. I copied and pasted the following from Comcast.com site: (Security: Comcast Security Channel features McAfee virus protection, firewall and parental controls to help ensure a safe online environment for your family.)
3. I don't have Yahoo quick select tool listed in my add/remove section.
Hope I answered all your questions sufficiently....let me know if I didn't. I'm off to bed PDQ here.....

That's your problem. And I was unable to find any way to make that "go away". Once you upgraded to IE7 people are reporting this issue when they uninstall.
You might have to use FF for your yahoo mail until the IE7 final is released (or at least a newer beta) and then switch to that.
The only other option is to re-install the OS because - contrary to what MS tries to get people to believe - IE is very much an integral part of the XP OS. At least it is when it's included as part of the distribution.
