A new problem...

Following some glitches with my CD ROM, a friend brought a computer technician today...he renewed a connection lead...same glitch on the CD Rom.

( I had some help from Osprey on the CD Rom problem on the other Forum).

On closing the case, we could not boot up...opened the case...booted up halfway and stopped...tried SysteM Restore...checked all the connections...booted up with the case open...OK.

Closed the case, failed to boot up again three times...opened the case, booted up, slowly.

Put in XP disc and ran it - closed case...no boot up...opened case and it booted up.

Going nuts - any suggestions?

Re-install - buy a new Dell?

There is no interlock on the Dell case doors, so I would suspect a cable is loose or not connected fully.  With the power off,  doublecheck all the cables to the hard drive and to the CD/DVD drives to make sure they are fully seated on the drive connections.  Also check the power connectors to make sure they are fully seated.  Also check the cables at the motherboard end.

If there is a loose cable and the case's door happens to touch it and move it slightly when closing it could be a cable that is not fully or properly installed.

Fireberd and JM,

Thanks for your comments - got it started this morning with the case closed.

Despite the new CDROM it still does not usually recognise when I insert a disk in D - I get it going with the VLC program eventually.

I have had the 8200 for 4 years so guess it is time to reinstall from scratch...not looking forward to it, but have had a few small glitches recently...dead keyboard...slow to shutdown...minor things which tell me action needed.

Your thoughts on the benefits of a reinstall on a 4 year old machine? Get another year out of it maybe?

When you pass 50% of the cost of a new machine in order to repair that one, it is time to consider a new machine.

Was it Mort Sahl, when asked..."Do you love your wife?"

Replied...

"Compared with what?"

It was Lenny Bruce who said  "A wifes' place is in the stove".

Mrs Wills, if you read this - I am joking - honest!
