Acronis True Image 10

I would say yes because i can image a Vista Ultimate 320 gig drive that has 25 gigs of info on it to a 111 gig ext drive that is almost full and still have 37 gig,s of free space with about 60gig,s of info on it from the start !

The image software compressed the 25 gig,s to 11.5 gigs !

I did not use Acronis True Image 10 i used Seagate disk wizard witch is based on Acronis True Image 10 !

If you have Seagate drives you can download it for free from Seagate !

As long as the size (uncompressed) of the data is less than the target drive size,  Acronis will copy the image to it.

If you use Acronis True Image to "backup" a drive, and then you "restore" that backed up image to another drive and that hard drive is larger it will only create the same size drive partition as the original drive.  e.g. if your drive is 160GB and you back that up and then restore it to a 400 GB drive is will only restore and create a 160GB partition, it will not use the entire drive. 

 

If you want to "restore" the old drive's data to a new larger drive you must use the "Clone" function in True Image.  I'm not sure how that will work with XP, but I did that with Vista and had to use the "bootrec.exe tool" on my Vista install DVD to fix the boot record on the hard drive before I could use it. (this is for both V10 and the current V11 of True Image).

Absolutely false, Acronis can restore to a smaller or larger partition size if needed. I don't know where you get your information, I suggest reading the user guide before giving misleading information. Acronis has been able to do this since version 6.

This is the only restriction imposed by Acronis when it comes to restoring to a partition size.

 

I don't know how many times I have restored an Image to a smaller or larger partition using Acronis, too many times to count.

I did that and how I found out.  I had a full hard drive backup of my 160GB drive to an external hard drive.  I then did a restore of that full backup to a new 400GB hard drive.  It restored the data but only to a partition the same size as the original hard drive.  It created a second (empty) partiton on the larger hard drive for the rest of that larger hard drive.   I then contacted Acronis tech support and was told to do the Clone and they also referenced me to Microsoft KB927392, as I would have to do the procedure listed in that KB for Vista.
