try restoring the default settings in ie/tools/security/internet zone, and on the "advanced" tab.. if you are using zone alarm or etrust ez firewall, disable the "privacy" feature in it..
don't even think on trying to download sp2... it might slow down your system, low resolution, large icons on desktop, and a lot more complicated issues...
ever since microsoft release sp2, a lot of dell users has been affected after they have downloaded it. so i suggest that you uninstall it and reinstall your windows xp as well as the drivers needed and also some applications that you use
ok, so you have the default settings ("medium") for the internet zone.. (?) look and see if you have " *.microsoft.com" in you list of restricted sites, and, if so, remove it.. (or if you have microsoft.com in another zone, like "trusted sites", and you have the security level for that zone set to "high" instead of medium or below..

odius, are you saying it was a problem with your hosts file? i am not familiar with the other stuff..
Host file? If you mean what tells my Wireless card the ip address, yes, I guess. But I have the router set as an access point, not as an access gateway. I set it up the way linksys told me to, and never had a problem. My signal is almost always Excelent ot the least Very Good. No drops, even when I walk outside to the car with the laptop. As an access point, you have to give it an IP address, and each computer has to have a different one, well they are the same except for the last 2 numbers. It doesn't obtain it automatically.
Took me several hours with the tech support on Dell to get my computer back on the internet. I did a clean install of XP, installed drivers and then installed Sp2. After the spending time with Tech support, it got to the point where I realized what was wrong. Tech had me do a few hundred thing, but it all boiled down to setting the IP address and the DNS. Dang I knew that too, but for the life of me, it took 2 hours with a nice tech support agent to help me. So far, Sp2 has been behaving, except for the Bluetooth card. BUt that doesn't matter since I don't use it anyway. Order the CD, comes in about a week and is easier than downloading it.
I'm one of the unfortunate ones that had automatic updates active and got SP2 when a helpful person allowed it to install. I uninstalled it, but I'm having real difficulties now with IE in Dreamweaver. It refuses to let me display a page with JS on it even though I have gone through and checked all the necessary boxes in Security and Advanced settings. I am not comfortable with anything pertaining to XP - is it non-harmful to reinstall XP or will I really screw up things?
Tried this - and went to the security tab and set restricted to low and disabled all ActiveX controls. Was able to install SP2, but, here's the strange thing: when I tried to get downloads/updates for MS Office, it could not detect any new downloads because the same error kept popping up - could not display the page because of the Active X controls settings. Tried the fix suggested at the site and that did not work.
I have the Office site as a trusted site as suggested at the site, but still am blocked because of the ActiveX controls settings...
At the Microsoft site, the site can automatically look for updates, but not on the Office site becuase of the ActiveX controls.
