Add ons.

Question

I am treying to add back Oulook Express, windows media player, and internet explorer to my daughters computer. She just returned from France where she had to remove them for school. I am a little confused about it. When I go to add ons from the XP CD. It has a place to add/remove add on's. Does checking the programs add them or remove them.  I had outlook exprees check and installed, but when I went to add the others, it deleted outlook express! What do I need to do?

She had to remove them for school? I was not aware you could remove Internet Explorer.   You can do this from Add/Remove programs and do them all at once. Go to control panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, and just check the ones you want to add. Insert your Windows XP disc and you'll be all set.   If this does not seem to work, then you already have the programs installed on the computer and you just need to re-set the desktop icons.

Actually, unchecking these from add-remove windows components just removes access to them from the Start menu. It doesn't uninstall them--as explained on that page in the small print. Just recheck and they should be available.

Under Windows XP and Server 2003, the only systems I have available the Outlook Express program is 'msimn.exe' whose default location is in c:\Program Files\Outlook Express'  After removing the Outlook Express component the above mentioned file is no longer in its default location, nor is there a link in the start menu.  On my Windows XP system there remains three copies of 'msimn.exe' one in C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ another in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 and the third copy is in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\1312a3f1ac98f15508399b7807031040.

I believe OE and WMP (versions earlier than 9) can be uninstalled. IE cannot. Glad to hear this worked. I was just wondering if this is some stupid EU thing that she had to remove the programs.

An examination of the entries for Outlook Express and Internet Explorer in Add/Remove programs indicates the size of what will be added or removed is 0.0MB in either case. Further, the details for OE indicates "Adds or removes Outlook Express from the Start menu" and for IE indicates "Adds or removes Internet Explorer from the Start menu or Desktop."

Then why is the executable missing, from its home c:\program files\Outlook Express. By  the way it is only 60 KBytes in size, which is 0.06 MBytes and since I believe every is measured in MBytes could be lost in truncation.
