after newest "windows update" is installed on XP...

This happened to our 'fix it' guy and to me.  We have 10 PC's (all dells) where I work.  Our fix it guy called & said to shut off the automatic update feature since it caused him to lose "everything" on his PC.(?)  I quickly took off the auto updates off the PC's at work and at home, but not quickly enough for my own work PC--when you reboot you get the bright blue screen with error message and it says stuff about winsys and needing to reinstall the application MAY work to fix this problem!!  HELP.  I have the auto update disabled on my PC here at home but I still have the little bubble telling me to download the XPS2 update but I'm afraid to (?) Anyone else have this issue???

I'm not finding anything on Google or Yahoo! with "reinstall winsrv".  You could try going to one of the Microsoft newsgroups and asking.

[Edit] However, I did find this:

Blue Screen STOP Message C0000135 Appears at Startup

I've had the exact same problem and error message on my son's Inspiron 8500. Could not figure it out and had to reformat hard drive and shut off auto updates until we get some answers. Can anyone please help??

chapter 2...I ended up spending just about all day on the line to DELL having the guy there walk me through totally reinventing my hard drive.  This is totally horrible and I lost a lot of documents I needed at work.  I just want to understand how this happened?  My 'fix it' guy had this happen last THURSDAY and Microsoft is still allowing the SP2 to come into PC's through automatic update?? AND IT WIPES YOUR HARD DRIVE??? One would think, what with all those employees, tekkies and ALL THAT MONEY that Microsoft would have had a warning on their website within 24 hours and STOPPED the downloads through automatic updates!!  This is an unexcusable error on THEIR PART and it stinks that we innocent purchasers of ALL OF THEIR products have to sit back & just take it!  :-(

Please get off your soap box, it is not helpful.  I am using Win XP Pro + Sp2 on two PCs with no problems and so are many others.  Remember most posters here only report problems, not sucesses.  It took me less than five minutes to configure their new firewall.  That was all I had to do.  My PCs are used extensively, mostly for graduate school research (CIS).  It is unfortuneately that you are having serious problems.  Some of you problems are of you own doing,  "This is totally horrible and I lost a lot of documents I needed at work."  If you performed backups, as you should,  this would not have had happened, and whose fault is that?  Before I did the upgrade I did a complete tape backup of my system to insure that I had a recovery plan just incase.

I've installed SP2 on two desktops and one laptop computer so far and it never wiped my hard drive.

It worked fine on four of my other desktops as well. The only one that had this problem was the Inspiron 8500 ?? There must be some componet in the 8500 that is causing the "winsrv" error. Does anyone have any ideas??

Okay, I'm off the soap box.  Glad YOU didn't have to deal with reinstalling everything on your PC's.  Lucky you.  And, you're right, I should have had backups.  I am purchasing an external hard drive today to backup at the end of every day.  However, the bottom line is that from what I've been reading on the boards all over about 3 out of 5 PC's are getting the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) with the error message and having to spend 2 days getting everything put back in due to an error that Microsoft could have helped people prevent from happening.  And, even if you had backed up everything, 2 days is a lot of work time to waste.   Once this happened a couple of times, they should have had some kind of warning at least on their website one would think??

Where are you getting the number 3 out 5, I have not seen it, not have I read any authoritative reports stating such.  A complete restore takes a couple of hours not days.  Remember these or any other bulleting boards are not statically valid, they are the same as surveys taken at web sites, therefore you can not extrapolatee any numbers from them.

...whatever.  and I find it very sad that someone who obviously knows computer things would defend a company like Microsoft who basically made a serious mistake & won't own up to it or even admit it ever happened (even to a total of 10 PC's in the whole world!).  If that was a small business (like a construction company) and they did something to ANY of their jobs that caused this kind of result--they'd be out of business at the very least AND BANKRUPT!

Actually, I reinstalled Windows XP and then installed SP2 and then reinstalled everything on my PC.  :-)

Backups are always a good idea if you have stuff on your machine you can't do without.  For me, I can fit on a single CD the stuff I need to keep so anytime I do a reinstall I just burn that stuff on a CD and format away.

As for the error message, what did Windows have to say?  Did you search the MS Knowledge Base again?  What about Google?  I understand your frustration and if it's such a widespread problem then I'm sure MS is working on a fix.

I did get a blue screen with no error message one time after a system lockup (while running SP2... before my last reinstall).  Just once.  And so far I'm running good now.  But then, I'd been running good for over a week before I got that blue screen.  We shall see.  :-)

It might help you out a bit if you are using software on this list.

Yes, I did Google the exact error message which is how I figured out that I was not alone with the problem I had (the BSOD from the Automatic Update of SP2).  I was able to fix it (at least reinstalling all of the Windows XP and all of the software that I got when I bought this Dell PC) yesterday with a Dell support person talking me through it.  And, I just purchased an external hard drive to be delivered tomorrow so the loss of stuff never happens again.

My only true question still remains "Why, after a week of this happening to people, hasn't Microsoft put a fix on their website or at least owned up to the error?"

All is well now with my PC anyway~so I'll just go about recreating all the information I lost.

Thanks for the supportive words, Dave.
