Alienware M18x R2 won't shut down

This laptop went to a black screen before login had completed. All fixes failed, so I reinstalled generic Windows 10 Pro. (It had previously been Win7 Pro, and had been automatically upgraded by Microsoft.)

It all looks OK now, but the silly thing keeps hanging whenever I shut down. Interestingly, it shuts down OK in safe mode.

The Dell Support Assistant tells me I'm up to date with all drivers except the BIOS. Unfortunately, the BIOS flash update requires a restart, and the shutdown hangs when I run the update. If I hold the power button and crash the system, the update doesn't take. And I can't run the update at all in safe mode.

Sigh ... What to do?
