Hi nigeljeremy,

If the Apps are not working then you may try Refresh your PC option. Request you to try following the below steps which might help:

(1)   Swipe in from the right edge of the screen

(2)   Tap Settings

(3)   Tap Change PC Settings

(4)   Click General in the left column

(5)   Under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started

(6)   Then follow the instructions that will be provided on the screen to refresh your PC.

Note: The files, inbuilt apps and personalization settings won't change. Apps that were manually installed from discs or websites will be removed.

If the above steps don’t work then you may try following the below steps:

(1)     If the User Account Control is turned off then the Metro apps will not work.

(2)     You can check if UAC is enabled here:

(3)     From the Start Screen, type in Control Panel.

(4)     Click on Control Panel tile.

(5)     Then click on User Accounts.

(6)     Change User Account Control Settings

(7)     Try using a Local account instead of a Windows Live ID account.

If you have any other questions do reply to the same thread.

went for the refresh option but came up "some files are missing. your windows installation or recovery media will provide these files" I do not have recovery media and do not want to wipe clean the installation as their are only a few apps not working most of these I may not use often. is it possible to get recovery media to download? or is it  possible to download apps that come with windows 8 if so this would be the best option.

Hi nigeljeremy,

Request you to try the second set of steps provided by me in my previous response about User Account Control. If this doesn’t help then the only option is to put the computer back to factory state through the refresh option.

Hence if the above steps don’t work then do send me the system service tag via private message. I will check and see what best can be done.

To send a private message, click on my user name and select send a private message.
