In Windows Explorer, you can click on the Date header to arrange by date and click again to reverse the order. Click on Name header to sort by name. This works on any header.
You don't select "Sort by date." Double-click the "Date modified" header and the entries in that list will be sorted by ascending date. Double-click again and they will be sorted by descending date. You can sort the file name column in the same way--double-click to alphabetize, again to reverse alphabetize; or the size column--once to sort by ascending size, again by descending.

If you arrange by date using the Details display you can then change the display to either icons or thumbnails and the display will still be sorted by date. Alternatively, in the icons display right-click in the right pane and choose Sort by|Modified from the context menu.

Yes I know that part, but what I want to do is when I create a folder that contains many files I want to arrange them according to the date that I add to the file name. I want to be able to make a change to the contents of the file and still maintain the order in which I have it filed. With Modified it wont work this way. With Modified, if I make a change to the contents of the file it will change the date (modified) and thus the order it is in with the other files?
In Windows ME when you right clicked on an open space in a folder and selected "Arrange Icons By" you had a choice to do so by Date. In XP I don't see this option? This is what I want.
Like in the Send To option list, one can add to this list of options by going into the Windows, Send To Folder.
This is annoying as I have many files that I need to keep in the order that I place them, by date is one of the ways I need to do it.
If I understand you correctly, you want to be able to sort on the "Date Created" rather than on the "Date Modified". If that's correct, right click on the column heading in the "Details" view, and add "Created" to the list.

Where is the Date header? When I right click, arrange by date is not listed as an option.
