Automatic Updates for Windows XP worked from Sept 2004 through March 2005 and then stopped
Can anybody help me on this issue?
I had the Microsoft Automatic Update software loaded on my desktop. It worked fine from September 2004 through March 2005, and then quit. When I try to use it now, I get the internet page:
produced on my screen.
On that screen I see the phrase:
"Check to see if you need updates for Windows, your programs, your hardware or your devices." To which I click on the Express button, for "Get high-priority updates."
Doing so produces some checking, and then a new page appears with the statement: "Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue: (choose from two options, the first one being for "Register or reinstall the files for me now
(Recommended)"
Clicking on Continue, brings two screens seeminly trying to insall things, but ultimately I am led back to the original screen described in the first long paragraph above.
This is to say, it is a loop which gets me nowhere.
Apparently the 3 year warantee period on my desktop expired, and I am wondering if this is the root of the problem?
MicroSoft tells me my problem needs to be solved by Dell. Dell won't touch the problem for less that some $80. I would hope somebody on this forum could provide the answer, as I believe there are many people who have been suffering with this problem.
Thanks.

Stan E,
Click Start|Run. Type sfc /scannow. Press Enter. This will check system files for correct version. Have your XP CD on hand. If no CD, needed files should be in C:\I386 folder. Restart you computer. Right click on My Computer. Click on Automatic Updates tab. Make sure Automatic Updates is enable. (I prefer to download and install at my leisure). If you have updated to SP2, turn off 3rd party firewalls, enable Windows Firewall. Try to update again.

In my response, let me say that I have previously updated SP2. So I turned off my Norton Utilities firewall, (though did not enable Windows Firewall), but I did "Try again to update."
All I got was the same mess. (That is to say, the same loop I described before.)
[As an aside, before I did what I just described I checked my system "for the correct version." as you described. I did have a CD, but I stopped that whole thing, realizing I had updated to the SP2 system.
From what you describe, it appears I have incompatibilities, with the various versions of XP2 and possibly with Norton Utilities Firewall. This last mentioned software was installed very close to the time when my Automatic Updates stopped functioning.
Should I go back to my original XP CD now, and then hope I can update whatever I have to a time when I will need to newly install SP2?
I appreciate very much your assistance.

Stan E,
Do you mean you ran the sfc /scannow before you posted today and aborted it? Or, do you mean you ran sfc /scannow after you read my post and aborted it? Better to have let it run to completion than to abort. XP is pretty smart. It'll fix itself with a little help. We're in an egg or chicken first situation now. OK. Best thing to do is go ahead and run the sfc /scannow. We'll fix the SP2 issue later if needed. Might be risky to attempt uninstall of SP2 or Norton at this point.
Microsoft released this compatibility list on Dec. 16, 2005:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2
Also add Microsoft Update to your list of trusted Web sites.
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Security tab, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
Under Add this Web site to the zone, type (or copy and paste) this URL: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/
Click Add, and then click OK.
After doing these things, try to run Windows update again.
