Background menu in Display Properties is locked
When I go to Display properties > Desktop, the Background menu, Browse button, and Position menu are locked (greyed out), so I can't select an image as wallpaper to replace my solid color background. If I do that from the image itself (rightclick > use as wallpaper), the image will appear only for a moment when the computer is started and then get "covered" by the solid color desktop with all the icons etc. When I shut down, the image reappears again only after the desktop is removed, just before everything turns off. Not a big deal in itself, but annoying, and maybe symptom of bigger problems to come? Thank you anyone for your advice.

I have the same problem. I cannot even select "none" for my background. I had a spyware/adware/virus problem, but it is fixed (i believe). Like the previous questioner, the background I have selected appears briefly just prior to the desktop appearing, and just after it disappears on shutdown. But when I go to the "change a desktop background" menu in the control panel, I can access position and color, but not the background menu itself; I cannot even scroll thru the choices or browse. Any ideas?
Thanks
