backing up registry to cdrw
i need to backup registry before editing. xp backup utilty will not let e drive or cdrw to be the destination. the A&E drives are listed in the destination drop down, but program will only accept A drive. 200 disks would be needed. i could not separate the registry from the steady state file for a smaller volume. the sonic program will not show the steady file for selection. talked to dell tech and my hearing wouldn't cooperate. they said something that sounded like i can repair the registry if i screw it up by using the repair mode on the reinstallation . registry key for photo shop program needs a change. cannot ACCESS the photo shop now. all this defies logic'

You don't need to back up the entire registry before editing. Open the registry editor and navigate to the value you are going to change. Prior to making any changes click the key (the entry in the left pane) that you are going to make changes to then click File|Export. Save the file (it will be a *.reg file) with a name you can easily remember to your hard disk. Make your registry edits and close the editor. If something unexpected occurs as a result of your changes, locate the *.reg file and either double-click it or right-click it and select "Merge" to restore the registry to the state it was in before you made the changes.
You can also effectively make a copy of the registry by creating a manual Restore point before editing.
