bad_pool_caller error message when upgrading xp home to xp pro
Hi everybody,
I am unable to install XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 2400 without getting an error message and blue screen.. I have never had a problem before upgading XP home to XP Pro.
I get the error message
bad_pool_caller and "make sure the hardware or software is properly installed" ....restart computer and press F8 and select safe mode"
Technical info
"stop 0x00000cc2(0x00000007 0x00000cd4 0x00340045 0xe1163cd24).
The computer is all original configuration from Dell without any modifications. Every time i restart the computer i get directed to the instillation and it gives me the blue screen again when it hits the 34 min remaining mark. I realize that it is probably a hardware or driver conflict and was wondering if anybody knew what drivers or hardware were causing the problem. I would hate to have to format the whole hard drive and reinstall everything completely over. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Doug

This can happen if the installation fails to remove the previous XP files. A clean install would be better than trying to upgrade over Home.
See if this helps: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307153

Thanks for your response and I didn't realize that Microsoft was recommending a clean install for installation of xp pro. However, the error message is not the same type that I am getting. I do have a couple of links below that shed some light on my issure but am still wondering if anybody has had a similar problem and what did you do to fix it.
How to interpret a Stop 0xC2 or Stop 0x000000C2 error message on a Windows XP-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314492
Stop 0xC2 or BAD_POOL_CALLER
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_czgw.asp
this articl states"If you encounter a Stop 0xC2 message while upgrading to Windows XP Professional, the problem might be due to an incompatible driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup. To avoid problems while upgrading, simplify your hardware configuration and remove all third-party device drivers and system services (including virus scanners) prior to running setup."
My question is "what has changed in the Delll Dimension 2400 to cause the problem in upgrading to xp pro". I have upgraded many previous Dell Dimension 2400's and have never had a problem before.
thanks

I will probably try that next time. In the meantime, I received this official reply from Dell tech support.
"I wish to inform you that if you are trying to install Pro version, then
you should perform a clean install instead of the upgrade. I would
suggest you to format the partition and then try installing Professional
edition. If you do not format the hard disk drive and just upgrade to
Professional edition, you will receive this error and there is no fix
for this issue.
To format the hard disk drive please refer to the following link:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1036709&c=us&l=en&s=biz&cs=555"
I did not think there was a fix and I have now formatted the drive and the installation is now going smoothly. I still would like to know what driver or software on the Dell Dimension 2400 is interfering with the upgrade.
thanks to everybody who read this and tried to help me,
Doug

Strange . . other than a clean install, the only other thought is to go into device manager and uninstall the video driver any imageing devices andd try it over again . .

I wonder if the addition of windows updates may have caused the upgrade to stumble . . a real puzzlement!

To prevent this problem you need to remove the modem from inside the tower of the 2400 restart the installation then once you finish the reinstillation and reach the desktop reinsert your modem . Then you should be fine.

Do I just need to physically remove the modem from the 2400 case or do I need to remove the modem software though the add/delete program under settings and the modem?
thanks in advance,
Doug

Hi Jamez,
Thank you so much for suggesting removing the modem. I had 3 computers all stuck in the same place in my xp professional upgrade. I physically removed the modem(left the software installed) as you suggested and the xp pro installed perfectly. I can't believe that is was that easy! I did google searches all night last night and nobody on the web knew an easy fix for this problem(not even my dell support tech).
Great job and thanks so much. You have saved me a lot of time!
thanks again,
Doug
