Blue screen, black screen, McAfee, iTunes, attachments
From the message subject, you can see I could use some help here...
I have an Inspiron 1521, about 1 month old. I've searched these forums, microsoft forums, and contacted Dell tech support. I still need help
Here's what's happened, my apologies if it's information overload:
-Photo 926 printer wouldn't print until I disabled McAfee. Problem returned after each power-up because McAfee turned back on.
-Couldn't install Lojack because of conflict with McAfee. McAfee recommended patch, Lojack recommended uninstalling McAfee
-Day two, display showed what I'm told is the Blue Screen of Death
-Couldn't download quicktime or iTunes. Install would stop at 99% and hang: error 08x800704C8.
-Four more blue screens from day two until yesterday.
-Trouble connection to internet service, "no or limited connectivity"
-Suddenly lost ability to open & save email attachments using explorer
-Downloaded free AVG, but would not let me update the next day.
-Lost ability to download anything without errors or hanging, even with AVG and Windows defender off
-An "error # -5"
-An IP address conflict using a cable connection and the wireless card "off", with connection settings for finding address automatically
-Black screen after closing the laptop overnight, no response for several hours, then randomly started working
So far:
Uninstalled McAfee, got the printer and Lojack working
Installed firefox, unable to download initially, but loaded via thumbdrive, then was able to get most functions of iTunes and Quicktime. Then able to get downloads of AVG, and also open attachments
Tried resetting internet connections via instructions found on this forum, still getting IP address conflict
Checked internet connection with another laptop, no connectivity problems or conflicts.
Windows Vista up to date
Turned off all sleep and hibernation, leave laptop open and plugged in to avoid blackscreen until I can get help with that
Set frequent restore points, restored when new problems arose but had no effect
Found threads about making changes to registry values, but very reluctant to fiddle with the registry.
I'm not averse to finding and trying resonable solutions. The solutions I feel qualified to try on my own don't seem to help. I've spent hours - and I do mean hours - on the phone with Dell support trying to get answers. I'm hoping some folks can make some (serious) suggestions, although I'd understand if you poke some light-hearted fun at my predicament too. Thanks.
