Botched network set up.
In an attempt to set up networking, at least 4 times, and to use my DSL with Two PC's(hard wired together), with a router and a DSL modem /router. I have finally found out how to set all this up. I think!
My 1st problem at hand is to remove the botched network set ups, as I've learned that I don't need to network with the router, or so I'm asuming, after 2 months at this head-banging.
I would welcome any and all advice, please

If you have a combination modem/router, spend $20 and place a 5 port switch in between the unit and the PC's. Godd idea to blow out all the old setups and start fresh. Some helpful links here:

The problem at present is how to "uninstall the Windows networking", on both Win XP and Win98.
According to DLink folks I don't need it with their router DI604 behind the SpeedStream 5100b DSL modem/router ( set in bridge mode).
Now when I go to MyComputer>My Network Places, it is empty. But if I click on the "View work group computers", it takes along pause and comes back with:
"Home is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this resource, contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.
The list of servers for this group is currently not available!

Go into Network Connections and delete every single connection you see and do not create a bridge, it simply is not needed. Reboot and install the modem and reboot again.
Here's where the switch comes in. Place the switch in between the modem and the PC's using CAT5 (USB will not work). Plug in one of the PC's to the switch and create an internet connection. Forget about the netwrok at this point, just get connected and thne let's worry about networking later.

The SBC 2Wire modemincludes a router ( also incudes a WAP ) . . if this is what you have, the suggestion to place a switch ( versus another router ) is a good one. If you already have a router and do not want to buy a switch, you can turn off DHCP in your router and it in effect, becomes a switch. This works well in the ABC installatons I have done.

I've not done a SBC installation in a couple of months so what I said could be out fo date. I do have one next week . .

1/ Change the DSL modem over to bridge mode
2/ Reconfigure the router.
The tech from DLink Said there are a couple of ways to set this up. But after an hour and a half into it, leaving the modem in standard mode and not getting things working,he suggested changing the modem over to bridge mode. I yet to understand it all.
I still have some issues with the "network" which I hope to work out. Also I got rid of a software firewall before setup.According to all the techs this is a real issue in setting up and getting this stuff working. Re-installing the firewall software after a successful setup seems the way to go.
Kudos to DLink and SBC/Yahoo DSL support!
