BRIEF BLUE SCREEN WITH STOP:0X0000006B (0X0000009C......

1. Using Inspiron 8000 runnning Windows XP Home

2. Recenly installed AOLvr and possibly chaned something in the registry

3. Computer was working fine, then now I am unable to boot.  I get the black screen with the various boot options, but I cannot boot up in Safe Mode, etc.  The blue screen flashes very briefly with the Process1_initialization_failed, and the Stop message at the bottom

4. If I try to boot from WXPcd, what steps do I take, and can I recover data?

Instead of Safe Mode, have you tried "Last Known Good" from the F8 menu? If that works, shut down normally and reboot normally. Did you try "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"? If you can get to the C: prompt, you could run a System Restore to a date before you installed that new software.

If necessary, you could run a Repair/Reinstall of XP. Personal files won't be affected but you will have to reinstall all XP updates and hotfixes again.

Boot from XP CD
Press ENTER (not R) at first screen
Accept User License
Select your installation of XP (should only be one listed)
Press R at next screen for Repair/Reinstall

When that's done, get firewall and antiviral software running and go directly to MS update site for all the updates and fixes.
