Can I change back to XP

G'day I currently am running Windows Vista Home Premium OEM on my Dell Inspiron 1520 and was wondering whether I am able to downgrade it to XP Pro Sp2. I have an OEM disk. I just don't like Vista and want to use my good old nice and clean xp.

But can you legally downgrade from Vista Home Premium back to XP or do I have to purchase a new copy. Its strange cause when  I installed Vista the licence agreementt said I could downgrade from Home Premium but I've looked on Microsofts website and they say only Business and Ultimate users can.

emaildown:

You do not have downgrade rights with Vista Home Premium. In order for you to install XP on your system, you will need to purchase a new licensed copy of the software.

I also forgot to mention that the cd also says that it does not include the programs and drivers...don't know if that info helps

And Thank You!

Okay, my question is kind of the same but a little different circumstances. I have a dell precision workstation m50 and my daughter spilled juice on it. I have had it repaired since then, don't ask..it was some money. He installed vista ultimate on it which i really didn't want because I am not familiar with it at all.

I do have a dell reinstallation cd windows xp pro sp2 & I tried to install it instead of vista. As it was installing the xp I got a message cmnicfg setup cannot copy the file.

Can you help me, I have to warn you I am not computer savvy but can do things if explained and if you have patience.

mary2dogs:

Yes, you can reinstall the original XP software on your system if you choose.

In regards to the error, when reinstalling, make sure to choose the option to format the partition.

Refer to the following link:

http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdnewhdd/indexfullpage.htm

You can request a backup Dell resource disk via the following link:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

Or you can download the drivers for your system from our support site.

If you need additional assistance, I would recommend posting a *new* thread with your questions, and one of our board members will be able to assist.

Good luck!
