Cannot install Windows Updates
I receive automatic downloads of windows updates, but They will install. I get the install screen and I click the "install" button, but nothing happens. I did not have this problem until about two/three months ago. The install screen says "installing, please wait," but I see no red status bars. I even left it on overnight to see if it was just slow in stalling, but nothing. These are critical updates from windows, so I'd like to install them. Any suggestions?
PS
I am getting no error messages. They are just not installing. I also tried to install from the Windows update web site. I did get the installing status bars, but it took a long time and did not install.

Look in the file Windows Update.log and see if any error appears there. It sounds like you might find error 0x8007007e and the correction for that error is here.
Another option you can try is to go to Windows Update and click the "Personalize Update" link. When the screen refreshed you will have a link in the left pane to the Windows Update Catalog where you can select the updates and download them, then try to install them from your hard disk.

Denny,
Thank you for the suggestions, however, neither worked. There were no errors listed in the update log. I also tried to download from the website and it seemed to work, but then I chrecked the log and it said download unsuccessful.
Any thoughts?

Did you temporarily disable your antivirus program and any script blocking component of it before attempting the download and installation of the updates ? Suggest you go here and follow the steps for Win ME after doing so :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585
Note: Under the Remove the Windows ActiveX Controls heading, the location of iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll is in the WINDOWS\System folder NOT the WINDOWS\System32 folder. Also suggest removing the Update Class (iuctl.inf) file found in WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder by right clicking it and choosing Remove. Now do step 5.
Also, check to see if Sucatreg.exe is in the WINDOWS\System folder. Although it's a protected system file, some users have managed to have it removed from their systems and could not install updates. Extracting the file with MSConfig solved the issue.

Mowgreen,
I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but I followed your suggestion. I went to the website. I printed the directions. I followed the directions. I went back to Windows Update. It gave me the message about checking my computer for windows update. The certification window came up. I clicked yes and then the screen froze. I used control, alt, delete and the status bar said IE- Windows Update (not responding). I ended task and tried again, same result. I restarted my computer and tried again with the same result. I am beginning to feel like a fool, you know, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Any suiggestions?
