Cannot Intsall Vista Ultimate on my Latitude

Hi.
I have a Latitude D620 and I have installed Vista Business, which is what I am currently using.

I have purchased a copy of Vista Ultimate and wish to do a fresh install.

However, I booth from the DVD fine and it starts to load the files etc. After it loads the files I just get a blank screen. Nothing on it whatsoever. The DVD drive spins down and, silence.

I have to manually power off the laptop by holding th epower button.

Ive tried removing 2GB RAM, so I am only left with 2GB in my system, as I thought maybe this had something to do with it, but it makes no difference.

I have also tried to connect my laptop to an external monitor, but still the same.

Any ideas guys??

Thanks in advance.

Just a thought here, have you checked to see if there are any firmware updates for your optical drives?  I know when I first attempted to install Vista on my XPS 410 earlier this year, it was VERY problematic.

My problem is somewhat the same as yours. I cannot go on installation Vista Home premium when it goes to 'completing installation' and I have to manully power off my insprion 1720. I contact Dell tech support but they cannot solve the problem either, saying this is a 'special' problem although it seems quite universal now. Anyway, customer sevice of Dell is patient. Now, I send an email and wait reponse from Dell. If I can solve the problem later, I will exchage ideas with you.

Hey Guess what bigwhitebear. . . my 1720 is doing the same thing. I can not go past Completing Installation. I also had Sound bug problems. The PC speaker was skipping in and out and the other speakers as well. So far I would say Vista is poo. Lets see how my PC is gonna get fixed. :(

My issue was slightly different to yours since I already had Vista Business installed, and just wanted to do a fresh re-install of Vista Ultimate.

For some reason even my original Vista Business disk stopped working. It would load the initial files and then nothing. I wouldnt even get to the first reboot or to any of the installation whatsoever.

Luckily my work laptop is exactly the same as my home laptop, and the discs worked fine on the work laptop. I therefore removed my HDD and placed it into my work laptop - again the problem occured.

This narrowed the issue down to be with my HDD.

In the end I had to boot from a Windows XP Pro disc, to get to the point where you can format the Hard Disk. I completely formatted the HDD, and my Vista discs started working again!

I suspect something in the MBR that was stopping them, not sure what, and it shouldnt happen. But its resolved now.

Ifti123 I found a Windows ME disk and I was able to boot up and start the Format! My XP and 2000 Disks did not work. The HD is being formated as we speak. I hope this works. :)

It was the RAID. It seems to be a problem that a lot of folks have. The fix was disabling AHCI Specification (Advanced Host Controller Interface) to ATA. It worked fine after that.
