Cannot reinstall Vista
Hello All,
I have done extensive searching and trying of solutions but hitting a brick wall! I am going to try to be as imformative as I can be about actions taken and hopefully someone will come up with something that I might have missed:
Problem: I am trying to reinstall i computer (DELL Vostro 410) to original factory settings but cannot get it to work.
Initial Attempts:
1. Attempt to install from recovery partition: F8 > Selected Repair Your Compuer, I am then taken to a login windows that says 'Other User' and I cannot login with any of my accounts. I have attempted to create new admin accounts but still cannot get past this screen.
2. Attempt to install from DVD (Originals supplied by dell): Select Language > Install > Acces Terms > Custome - Advanced > Where do you want to install! This is where the problem appears. I am seeing 3 primary partitions as follows:
Disk 0 Pertition 2 RECOVERY 10GB
Disk 0 Partition 3 OS 288GB
Disk 0 Partition 4 1MB
When I select Partition 3 I get the following error "windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation". However this is the partition that the OS currently resides.
I have tried changing BIOS Boot order as suggested by microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938984
I have tried removing all boot devices less for HDD. (little extra attempt based on microsoft kb above)
I have tried installing from command line as per: http://smsoftdev-solutions.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-restore-dell-factory-image-when.html
Any Suggestions?
thanks

I have found a solution using the DVD.
When I got to the "Where Do you want to install" screen. I deleted: Disk 0 Partition 4 1MB and it then allowed me to continue the install on Parition 3.

There is a dell journal HERE, on how to get it back to factory state, and a dell journal HERE on manual install.

Please try following my wiki below "A Clean Install of Windows", delete all the partitions and make one large one with which to reinstall on.
