Can't boot into safe mode

I thought I'd try restoring an old registry for the problem regarding the File Associations, so I followed Denny's directions.

I hit "restart" and then after my screen cleared, I hit the control button and held it down.  I got to the Dell Logo Screen and it sat there.  Then it beeped at me. I had to hit "escape" to get out of it. Then, the black screen came up with some info on it ultimately saying "initialization complete" .....then, I discovered my son left his CD in the drive. Thought maybe this was why it didn't boot in safe mode, so took it out and tried again........same thing. Gets to the Dell Logo Screen and sits.

I don't want to try booting AGAIN because I won't have a pre-problem registry to restore to.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you, Denny!  I will give this a try...although I'm afraid to now!

Cybernanc,

Rather that use one of the methods to boot to Safe Mode which requires timing try restarting your system with a non-bootable floppy disk in the A:\ drive. At the "Non-system disk" error remove the floppy disk and press F8 twice. Choose Safe Mode from the menu.
