Can't create system repair disc

When I click on 'create a repair disc' in 'Backup or Restore your Files', a window (insert a blank disc) flashes for an instant followed by the message 'Windows Repair Disc has stopped working, check online for a solution & close the program, or 'close the program'  Under 'view problem details' I see APPCRASH, recdisc.exe.  I've restarted the computer but the problem continues.

This is a new Inspiron 660; I'm just going through the setup processes.  OS is Win Home Premium, 64bit.

Thanks,

Peggy

Thanks. Actually I was aware of the Dell utility. I could not get the Dell B&R utility to allow me to create the repair disc onto a CD or DVD. That's what I was trying to use the native windows utility to do and it was crashing. I did just get a follow up email from Dell support and it provided a solution for allowing the native windows utility to work as designed. Turns out the issue is actually caused by the Dell backup and restore utility. Here is the workaround provided by Dell support that I have just tried and it worked perfect for me. I actually did not have to reboot the system - likely as I had not run the dell utility yet since last boot up.. //////////////////////// Resolving a repair disk creation failure using Windows 7 backup. ***ISSUE*** You may encounter an error when you select the option to create a repair disk using Windows 7 backup. When you select the option to create a repair disk, you may encounter "Windows Repair Disk has stopped working". ***SOLUTION*** The error is caused the interference in the disk creation process by the DBROverlayIcon.dll file which is a component of Dell Backup and Recovery. A workaround to create the disk can be achieved with the following steps: Right-click the start pearl, click explore. Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell Backup and Recovery\Components\Shell In that folder right-click the DBROverlayIcon.dll and rename it to DBROverlayIcon.old Exit explorer and reboot the system You should now be able to create the Windows Repair Disk. Note: Once you are successful creating a repair disk, rename the DBROverlayIcon.old back to DBROverlayIcon.dll. Have you installed all Windows Updates?

Someone reported that doing that helped him.

Also, make sure you have the latest Dell Backup and Recovery software. http://www.dellbackupandrecovery.com/en-us/Index2.html

Yes, all Windows updates are installed.  I dl'd & installed Backup and

Recovery. Using that was able to write the 'tools only' portion to DVD but not the 'image' portion.  When I try to do both I get the error:

Unhandled error has occurred in your application.  If you click continue, ti will attempt to continue...  COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used.

I tried again from the beginning, this time I got the msg 'directory is not empty'.  Tried two new DVD's, recd the same message.

Thanks,

Peggy

Maybe try doing a back up with a USB flash drive.

Be sure to buy one 16GB or larger and not a Sandisk because some people are reporting problems with Sandisk.

I went back to Win7's recovery disk utility and was able to complete it and write it to DVD this time.  And I used their system image function to put an image on my external hd.

Thank you for your help with my problem; your encouragement  kept me going.

I'm having same issue with a new XPS 8700 running Win 7 64Bit. Windows 'create a system repair disc' option fails - crashes. 'Create a system image' did work fine but not the create repair disc. In Dell backup and Recovery it seems to only want to allow it to a USB attached hard drive. I can not get it to do it to a large USB flash drive.. Very frustrating.. Called support but they had no idea.

I found how to do this... on your desktop is a program called Dell backup and restore. Use that instead of the traditional Windows method. I felt so stupid once I realized it had been sitting there all along. URGH!

Thanks for sharing that! I figured it HAD to be the Dell program interfering.... once I actually noticed it existed lol. I'm sure this problem will come up for many more, so I'm glad you shared the official solution. Thank you!!

Happy to share. That's really the only way these forums can work. I had done a forum search for recdisc and read a number of the discussions looking for a solution. Would have been nice to come across this at that time so happy to put it out to help others looking for the solution. In one of the forum threads I did see mention that it had been seen to be caused by 3rd party apps changing or adding to the basic Microsoft application function - so that made me start suspecting something like the Dell app as well. I was actually about to try a complete uninstall of the Dell backup and restore app to see if that resolved the issue when I got the answer I shared from support. It confirmed it was that Dell 3rd party app and the suggestion provided to just temporarily rename the one specific DLL as a quick fix was much nicer that doing the full uninstall.

I've had this same problem. When I tried the solution outlined in your post, it still failed and gave me the same error message. Any other suggestions. Thanks.

Sorry.. I don't have any other suggestions. The solution I posted was what Dell support person sent to me and it worked fine for me since it was the Dell backup application that was causing the problem on my win7 XPS 8700.

Flippin Awesome.  Thank you so much.  I had same problem on a brand new Dell PC, and I just knew it was bkz of the Dell Software.  How can Dell be ok with doing that? Interfering with the Windows system. Terrible. And I would have used the Dell Backup utility but it wanted over 7GB storage and I only had a 4GB DVD.  I just wanted to create a backup Windows CD. No reason for it to be 7GB. Dell are the ones who don't ship it with the PC in the first place. Anyhow, thank you for your solution.

Will simply uninstalling the DELL Backup program get the job done?  We're changing backup strategy to use an external hard drive so we have catastrophic failure recovery capability.

Thanks...

Likely that would work as well - assuming it removes that DBROverlayIcon.dll file and leaves the standard windows utility as is. I'm not a Dell support person so can't say for sure.
