can't get safe mode to work with windows me
Hi. Any help is highly appreciated. I have a Dimension 8100 and am using Windows ME. I'm trying to do a scan and defrag, but it's just not working even after I do everything I've read. The only thing I haven't tried is to run it during safe mode, but that's because I can't get into safe mode. I hit CTRL upon rebooting to get to the startup menu. I think it says to hit the arrows to move the cursor to #3, which is safe mode. The arrow keys don't move anything, and neither does any other key. I think it said to it F5 to go to safe mode, but that didn't work either. I saw a trick posted where you "place a non-bootable floppy diskette in your A:\ drive and restart the computer. At the "Non-system disk" error remove the floppy disk and press F8 twice. Choose Safe Mode from the menu." This didn't work. After I removed the disk and hit F8 twice, nothing happened. Nothing happened no matter what key I pressed. I had to pull the plug. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, please let me know if I should have posted this in a different forum. Thanks.

The problem should have been posted in Software - Windows Operating Systems - Old Versions. Are you using a USB keyboard? If so, try any of the options for booting to Safe Mode using a PS2 keyboard. (The "Non-system disk" method never fails, unless the computer doesn't recognize the F8 keypresses.) It sounds as though your keyboard drivers are not loading.
