can't install new version of AVG

Question

I downloaded and am trying to install the newer version of AVG Anti-virus; but I keep getting this message:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation: Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run: creating registry key....
Access is denied. (5)

I already uninstalled the old version like it told me to but I can't install this one; it won't allow me to. What can I do???

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and then running the installation?

Did you have AVG previously installed? Many upgrades will write over existing versions with no problem but others don't. You would have to uninstall old version through add/delete programs and then try. Also, I have seen situations where add/delete does not remove all traces of previous version and you would have to go to my computer, programs files and delete that way. AVG would be in a folder titled, Grisoft. If you have a hard time finding it, simply go Start, Search and check all files and folders and put in AVG and if it's there it will be found. I use AVG 7.0 along with SIS 2005. When I did a search for AVG by the above mentioned method, it found numerous files. If push comes to shove, do a restore to earlier time and try again. Was the download interrupted? Are security settings set too high? Do you have XP2 and did it ask you if download was OK? Unfortunately there are many possibilities for the problem but more than likely, it is something simple.........Good luck. jdog23
