Can't install software from CD/DVD drive on new system ...
Hi there,
I just got my new xps 16 laptop yesterday and was working through setting it up.
It's got this version of Vista and McAfee installed:
420-9319 1 Microsoft Windows Vista with SP1 Home Premium Edition 64-bit Edition English
410-2087 1 McAfee Sapphire MUI, 36-Month
I'm pretty new to Vista and am way more comfortable with XP so I'm sure its just me. But, I was trying to install Telus Connection Manager from its CD and can't. I can hear it running, but it won't actually execute. Nothing happens. I tried to figure out if there's something blocking it from running, which is my best guess, but the only control I could find that might help me was disable User Account Controls. So, I tried again after disabling this but it didn't help either.
I have administrator access to my machine so I don't get why this is a problem. I don't have any other user accounts set up.
I looked through the help menus about installing software from CD and I can't find anything specific to my issue. There were a few steps showing how to work through the "prompt for consent" where you give Admin approval to either allow the change (its from a trusted source or whatever) or not, which I tried first but it didn't work.
I'm feeling a bit frustrated and strong-armed by my new system. I hope its just a painful learning curve. And I hope Windows 7 is friendlier. I'm on my fifth Dell laptop and this is the first time I'm actually pretty frustrated so I hope I can survive the changes...
Any help or suggestions on what I could do to is greatly appreciated. My system seems really nice but without internet its an expensive dust-collector.
Yes, thank you for asking. I did. I can play music no problem. And my system recognizes and installs plug 'n play devices no problem (like my new usb mouse for example).
It seems like an internet connection issue/conflict between my Vista and Telus software. Maybe I should move this post to a more appropriate group? Not sure if that's right once you start a post (sorry... newbie in action here...)
I can see the Telus Internet Connection files in the cd/dvd directory and access them, no problem. I can't run any executables on the disk. They start and stop without showing anything on the screen. I browsed through some of the other Telus files to see if I could find anything mentioned that I could cross reference with my system settings in case my system's blocking something.
I was looking at my "Internet Connection" settings and thought maybe I was onto something because a few of the options under the Advanced Tab, Security section for running active content were not enabled. I think the first one specifically said "run active content from a cd on *My Computer" (or very close to this wording...) and it was turned off. So I turned it on, and the next couple of options which were similar, restarted my computer and still no go. Some setting concerning Active X controls are on and some are off (enable Active X is on). It just seems like something is blocking it from running, but don't you usually get some kind of message when your system blocks things from running? I don't get any messages. Under the internet connection settings,(I think its the "Programs Tab") I noticed that some of the settings weren't set yet, but for CD's/Software it was set to "install or run" . I just wonder if there's a setting somewhere under internet connections I just need to turn on? (For one thing, I noticed on the Telus disk, it installs Flash so I was wondering if maybe that's being blocked somehow but I couldn't tell.)
I know my system's wireless connection is on -- I can see the possible connections to connect to, including the one I want. If I use window's internet connection software/process (which goes against the advice on my Telus cd packaging) I can try to connect to my Telus wireless "zone 2", but after trying the system tells me it can't. I don't get to the part in the process where it asks for the key or password. When I click for more details, the message tells me its not compatible or there's a conflict (sorry I didn't write down exactly what it said), then tells me to manually set up a connection or contact "zone 2" administrator.
I can cable connect to my Telus modem and it works, and I checked the Telus software requirements and its compatible with Vista and IE 6.0 or greater, and I have these.
It got late so I gave up last night but maybe I should try setting up a manual connection? I wasn't sure if I can do this to connect to an already established connection. (Meaning, I program "zone 2" manually on my new system, should it connect with the existing "zone 2"? )
Ah, I'm doing my best but this is out of my area of expertise. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels over one small thing I just don't know about.

Have you tried any other CD's - either a data or a commercial music CD, etc, just to make sure the drive is working correctly?
