Cant load Windows XP on Inspiron 2600

Hi all,
I have 2 Dell Inspiron 2600 laptops. Both machines became quite "bogged down" with files and unwanted programs etc. Rather than clean up the installations, I decided a complete fresh install would be preferable. I backed up all my data etc and formatted the HDD. However, when trying to install Windows XP (home or pro - same problem) I keep getting error messages during the file copying process (i.e. Setup cannot copy the file: xxxxxx) It doesn't stop on the same file every time, in fact each time is different. I have tried the obvious, several different CD's, tried known working cd drives, changed the ram and even replaced the HDD but the errors persist on both units. I have ran PCCheck and all diagnostics pass except a message about a memory hole stopping the program from performing accurate tests. I am guessing this is the problem although I know the ram modules in both machines to be 100% working.

As I have 2 units behaving in the exact same way, I'm hoping this is a "common issue" and that someone out there has the answer!!! I have ssearched the forums with no success.

Any help would be very much appreciated - thanks in advance.:smileyhappy:

There is a workaround.

If You have any kind of NTFS bootdisk, you can whipe Your entire harddrive partitions and do a format, then use xcopy to copy the CD to the harddrive and install the OS from there.

Thanks for your input, I am grateful but as stated in a previous post - I have tried to run the installation from the HDD with the same results.

Thanks for your suggestions. I did copy the i386 directory to the formatted HDD, on your advice but still same problems I'm afraid :smileysad: Thanks all the same. I will persevere and keep you informed of any progress!!

Look at the bottom of the CD's to see if they are scratched, and if so, buff them out with a soft CLEAN dry cloth.  Do not use a circular motion but rather  across the grain.  It sounds like it can not read one of the files because of a scratch.
