Can't update Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 - Update error 80070002

I continue to get the error 80070002 everytime I try to install this MS update that was released yesterday, 11/28/07.   I have tried everything listed on the MS web site regarding this error.  Anyone else had this problem?  Got any solutions?

wise_cookie,
Not sure what "System Requirements" you are reading, but the MS page says:

" Supported Operating Systems: TabletPC; Windows 2000; Windows 2000 Advanced Server; Windows 2000 Professional Edition ; Windows 2000 Server; Windows 2000 Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2003 x64 editions; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition for 64-Bit Itanium-Based Systems; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter x64 Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition; Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition; Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Home Basic; Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Home Premium; Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Starter; Windows Vista Ultimate; Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition; Windows XP; Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2"

Those which I have highlighted in red all refer to the 32 bit versions.

Still doesn't work for me and I even tried running the update as Administrator.  I got a quick flash of a message "starting install" but that was it, nothing else happened.  I checked Task manager and there was nothing running.

I had the same problems yesterday.  I did everything MS said and still couldn't install update.  Today the update installed with no problem during my automatically install updates.

is this update a manual downloaded update or is it included in the auto updates?

if it was released on nov. 28 and it auto installed, i have seen no ill-effects.

After several (5) attempts to install this update yesterday and today, including following the Microsoft help instructions four times I have successfully installed the update after I turned User Account Control off.  I can't be 100% sure as MS may have just fixed a problem but turning UAC off is worth a try!  See also my post about UAC issues.

Rebel9: I finally heard back from MS. I wonder how all of us independently had a damaged .Net Framework component at the same time of a Windows update. I don't know what Net Framework does and had no symptom of a Net Framework problem. Anyway, as promised, below is the MS response. To be safe, I followed all of the steps and had no problem. One + to this is the Windows Clean Up Installer may be a useful tool. If any folks still have a problem with that Windows update they may want to try the MS solution. Regards, George Here it is:

"From your description, I understand that the error code 0x80070002 was encountered when trying to install Microsoft.Net Framework1.1 Service Pack 1, after trying some instructions and deleting some temporary update files, the issue was still existed. If I misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to resolve the issue.

The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time, let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot it:

Step 1: Remove .NET Framework 1.1 using Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

===========================================

1. Visit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Please save the file on your Desktop

3. Please double click the msicuu2.exe file to install it on your computer.

4. Click Start -> All Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.

5. Please locate and remove .NET Framework software.

Then, please move on to step 2 to reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 and its updates.

Step 2: Install .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package and its updates

==============================================

Please download and install the following updates in order.

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package

.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security Update for Windows Vista(KB929729)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7EEA368D-7B82-4583-8537-30351718A4E9&displaylang=en

Note: When the "File Download" window appears, please click Save, and follow the directions to save the file on the Desktop. After downloading all the setup files, please double-click on each one to install them. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

However, if any error message is encountered, please capture a screenshot for further research".

Hi George,
Thanks for the update. Yes, it's pretty amazing how all of us had "damaged" .Net Framework components. In any event, thanks for posting the MS solution. I'll bookmark this one for future reference.
