CD/DVD drive wants to format ALL inserted discs

Question

Apparently I've changed some setting that no longer allows me to run or read CDs/DVDs inserted in my disc drive. I'm trying to install some software, but the drive just hums for a moment and stops, with no message. When I click on the drive in My Computer, I get this pop-up:

Here are my AutoPlay settings:

I've also tried with the "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" box checked, but I get the same result. Obviously there's some setting somewhere that I need to change, but it's totally beyond me.

Am using Roxio Creator DE ver 9.0.116, in case that's pertinent.

This a.m. I also added an external burner - HP dvd1040 - which gets the same "Burn a Disc" box.

I'm desperate, as I have absolutely no access to my CDs/DVDs, which I really need. Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks for replying so quickly, pcgeek11.

A quick check of my program files doesn't show any such programs currently installed, although I think I might have tested Returnil at one time and uninstalled it. Maybe it left some stuff behind in the registry.

I'm scared to death of editing the registry (yes, I promise that I'll back it up first), but I'll give it a go and let you know the result.

Here is the answer I found for my problem which sound just like yours:

If you constantly get "Prepare blank disc" and Windows Vista tries to format all your CD's, DVD's, or CD-ROM's ( Burned or Stamped Commercial Disk ) then this might solve your problem if you have installed VMware.

By default, VMware disables autorun upon installation due to possible conflicts with some drives. Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSET\Services\CDRom

Look for the "Autorun" key. If its value is set to "0", set it to "1" and reboot.

Start "regedit"

Scroll down to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSET\Services\CDRom

Look on the right side for the "Autorun" key.

Right click the key and select "modify..."

"Change the value from 0 to 1 and select OK"

I have had my new DELL PC a week now and I am still experiencing this particular error. I have used software to burn discs, which says it has completed successfully, but then Vista cannot read the disc. I get the 'prepare this disc' dialog box. I have tried the accepted solution here but the autorun was already set to the 1 value. I have the TSST-H653F DVDRW drive, runing Vista Home Premium SP1, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Message Edited by Hammy84 on 10-20-2008 12:33 PM
