CODE 8000FFFF Error with brand new DELL XPS420 System - VISTA UPDATE NOT POSSIBLE

Hello to all,
 
I just bought a new XPS420 system, Q6600 Quad Core 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT, 750 GB HD, Vista Home Premium.
 
The computer is still in the factory set mode - I do not have made any changes or installed any additional software or hardware.
 
It is a nice computer, beautiful design and also working fine - the only problem is, that when I try to update MS VISTA the Error Code 8000FFFF is showing up and telling me that updates are not possible.
 
The solutions I could find here (delete some entries in the registry) do not work - it´s ending up in other Errror codes.
 
The Dell- Hotline  could not help me so far - they obviously know about the problem, but they do not have a solution yet   :-))
 
It makes me wondering why DELL is selling a hardware-software combination that still has a bug already pre-installed....  (and not informing the customer beforehand about this topic)
 
 
Any ideas?

have you tried a dell system restore?

Thx for quick response !!
 
I first tried the reg change. After deleting the line and starting Windows update the computer made an Update for Windows Update (!?).
 
Win Update was closed and started again automatically.
 
A new Error Message occurred:  8007007B
 
And now  - any ideas before I try to a Dell system restore?

I ran into this myself, and after doing some searching, I found the answer.
 
It's a know issue with one of Microsoft's hotfixes.
 
Open control panel
Open Programs
choose to look at installed updates on the left side of the screen (doing this from memory.....)
Look for a Hotfix for KB929777
 
The key is to run the Windows Update, do the install and let it fail.  Then go find the KB929777 in the list of installed updates and uninstall it.  Then reboot.   Go back into Windows Update and all will appear fine.  Run the "Check for Updates" again and it will come back and tell you KB929777 needs to be installed, run the install and this time it will work.  Reboot and it will successfully apply it.  From then on you're ok.

Unfortunately it did not work again: Same procedure as above, see my last thread, same error code...
 
Still not able to search for new Updates
 
 
What do mean with full error code?!?
The message is now "Code 8007007B" and no additional letters....

                             ...only one DELL so far which is allergic to VISTA Updates...

Have you moved any of the public folders? ie have you moved \program files to another location/drive. If so move them back.

If not the above try this...

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Now visit windows update and see what happens

BTW all this info comes from searching on Google :) Make sure you use the full error message in the search (0x8007007B)

Hello,
thank you for response.
I followed exactly your procedure, found the 929777 and deinstalled it.
Made a double check whether it has really gone, and started Win Update.
Again "Update for Windows Update" was performed, - but also again after that the same procedure: Still error code 8007007B !!!!  System is not able to search for new updates.
 
(and 929777 is still missing)
 
any new idea?

sorry - I have no idea what you are talking about.
 
May be my English is not good enough..
 
There is no 0x in front of the error code...  I posted the complete code.
 
And:
I have not moved deleted or changed any folders* - I have unpacked the brand new computer the day before yesterday, and the first thing was to connect it to the internet to perform the Windows updates...and then the problem started ....
 
 
I have neither installed any software, moved or deleted anything....

Full error codes start 0xblahblah.

You didnt answer if you had previously moved any of the public folders?

But it might shed some light.  My Dell is 9 months old, and all has been fine and actually still is.
I upgraded to 4 Gig ram about two months ago.  A few weeks later after doing a Windows Update, KB929777 would not install.
 
Apparently there is some issue with some Hardware configs that include 4 Gig ram, and the problem seems to be with Vista, not Dell.  I suspect not enough users of Vista are running 4 gig to make enough noise for a fix that may only be needed by an even smaller number of users.
 
Who knows.
 
Otherwise, I have no problem except to regularly ignore the failure to install message.  Other updates have installed just fine. And I can tell the difference with 4 gig over 2 - so that's working.
 
I understand the aggravation, but I suggest relax and let it ride, and enjoy your new computer.

I tend to follow EReese´ explanation. The link he posted explanes exactly my situation - including the identically content of the screenshots about the error messages.
 
JerryUK: There you can see, that there is no 0x in front...
 
What I would like to know:
 
Is this annoying KB929777 Update anything important?
 
Why didn´t it work after I have removed 2 GB Ram?    ----> see posting of Rebel9
 
               May be it was the fact, that after reinstalling VISTA I had already tried installing the 
               updates with 4 GB Ram installed, and after this failed, I removed 2 GB and tried
               it again...
               Was there something left from the first failed try, that avoided now the correct
               installation?
               If I have time, I will install VISTA new with 2 GB, to see whether I can prove this...
 
Also Dell-Bills last thread is probably worth a try.
 
I will keep you informed.
 
If there are any new things about this topic, please let me know.
