Has anyone experienced the com surrogate error message on startup? I have googled this topic and learned that there are a number of things that can cause the problem. Those things include some nero software, the divx codec, and in general some software that is not updated and fully functioning with Vista.
In any event, I cannot seem to locate the problem on my machine. Just when I think that pesky error message is gone, it comes back again! Because I generally have the most updated versions of ALL the software I have on Vista, there aren't too many things I can think of on my PC that could be causing the problem.
Things I am suspicious of.....
the patch for drag to disk for the latest version of Roxio Media Creator
Intel Viiv Technology (on the Dell upgrade disk for Vista) (I only suspect this b/c it didn't pass the MS Vista scanner
Dell utlities program (again on the Vista upgrade CD from Dell) (it also didn't pass the MS Vista scanner
I really don't know what else to check. Does anyone know of some catchall solution for this irritating error at startup? Again, just when I think it's gone, it comes back again....even when I haven't changed anything.
Had same problem and culprit was install of MTV Urge program as part of Media Player. Once I uninstalled the Urge software I have never gotten the message again. Perhaps that is your problem.
Yes!!! I did have Urge installed as part of WIndows Vista Media Player. Come to think of it, I don't recall ever getting that pesky error message before I installed it a couple of weeks ago.
Anyhow, I took your advice and uninstalled Urge. Then for a test, I have restarted my computer 5 times. The com surrogate error message has not returned in these 5 restarts of windows. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the solution.
Surely, you and I can't be the only ones on the Dell forum who have experienced this problem. So hopefully this information will help others out too! Thanks again for your feedback.
I have the same issue. Don't have Urge installed, but I do have a Divx codec installed for the Windows media player. I need it for the stuff I want to play, so I won't uninstall it. But I suspect that is what is causing the error. It is more an annoyance than a real problem, since things are working fine.
Also Have Nero 7 Premium Reloaded (ok for Vista) installed. And am having the issue here, that it works fine, but when I download the updates the whole program uninstalls itself.
If I remember correctly, you should be able to uninstall URGE through the add/remove programs options of Control Panel. As previously mentioned back in April, the program, URGE, was the culprit on my machine. I have never had the com surrogate error since.
Go to Control Panel and uninstall URGE. Post back if you have problems.
urge is a music store. Once it is installed, it is treated as your default store within win media player. If you don't see it within control panel, then the software is not actually installed on your computer.
If this is the case, something else is causing the com surrogate error. That's a pesky little error and there are a number of things that can cause it. I was lucky to learn in my case it was the culprit for my com surrogate error message.
However, in your case (since it's not installed), it sounds like it is something else creating the error message. It will be trial and error to locate the offending program. Try to think back to a program that you may have installed right before the error message started, ie google toolbar for explorer or anything else.
