Could not find the recovery data file

I am trying to re-install Win 98 on my Dimension 4100 and I get the following message : Could not find the recovery data file !
It seems Dell would answer that the CD is damaged or the CD Rom malfunctions to other users ....Not sure if I should just go out there and buy another OS or is there hope .

Could someone help me  ?
Thanks in advance

carole2u,

That's an odd error message. Have you formatted the hard disk prior to starting the installation of Windows 98? Are you using the installation procedure given here?

I had formatted my hard drive and trying to use the Reinstallation CD W98SE provided with my system

I followed the instructions on :http://http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?c=us&cs=19&DN=1035483&type=SRG&l=en&s=dhs

and I am stuck at Step number 4 when I select Format and Recover hard drive the error message " Could not find the recovery data file" appears.  I tried the 4 options available on that Emergency Recovery Menu and same error message appears.

Any idea ?

carole2you,

If you did not format your hard disk with the format c: /s command boot with the emergency boot diskette and at the A:\> prompt enter sys c: and . See if you can then follow the steps in the Dell KB document for reinsatalling.

Did the sys c: command and message System transfered was received.  I re-tried the steps for reinstallation and same error message shows up.

Any other idea ?

Thank you so much for trying to help me.  Much appreciate it.

carole2u,

Having gone to step 4 with two different configurations and gotten the same error message I tend to agree that there may be something wrong with the CD. I've never used the 98 SE CD you are using so I can't provide any suggestions at this point.

Well, this is my luck.

On top of this,  I was totally out of Internet access for one week as my company blocked access due to a Security issue with Internet Explorer. !  this is why I did not respond to you earlier

Thanks for trying to help me.  I did read on the Dell community forum of another user back in 2002 who also had the same error got a second Reinstallation CD from Dell .  It  did not work either and the user having an illegal copy of Windows had to use it.   and it worked out for him !

Thks,

Carole
