I downloaded the new Dell Support Center yesterday and ever since this folder opens at startup. I saw the other post about this problem, however I don't have that file in the registry because I uninstalled Dell Support Center. What I do have in the registry is C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe . I've attempted to put quotation marks around this entry, but it won't hold. I've tried Dell chat and they recommend a system restore. I'd rather not do this as I've never had good results. Any ideas why the edit to the registry won't stick? I have an Inspiron 1501 WinxpSp2
Interesting - I have the same issue that I would like to fix. Seems as though that there would be more people complaining about this than just you and I. If you find a resolution to this please post back as would like to rid my computer of this window at start up as well. Thanks.
juliekv, I found this article as well as posted in other areas of this forum and it says to edit the registry. I did it and it did work but the problem is that I don't know what the effect this has on my computer - other than stopping it from opening the Dell folder at start up.
Hi, Thanks for the reply. I did find the site at the URL you listed. That was the first thing I tried. The problem, as I mentioned, was that the change to the registry would not hold. I then deleted the entry from the registry and reentered it with quotation marks. Still, the quotation marks would not hold. So, I bit the bullet and did a system restore back to the date I installed the Dell Service Center software. Took care of the problem and the entry is still in the registry which tells me that entry was not the problem. I expect there isn't a big hullabaloo about this because the problem has something to do with other software I have installed (and you have installed). Unfortunately, Dell can't test for compatibility with all software, but still it is annoying. In response to the other reply: I didn't outright delete the entry from the registry because it has very useful functionality that I didn't want to lose. Besides it is never a good idea to delete items from the registry if you're not fully aware of what it does.
mpn6rxs As to your question re: what affect does putting quotes around the registry entry have on your computer. None. The entry is suppose to have quotes so that these service start in the background. If you look at the subfolders inside the Dell folder you'll see the Quickset folder contains executables and dll's for important services.
"Both Dell Support, and Dell Support Center, insert themselves into startup and load with Windows. This is totally unnecessary bloatware; it not only delayed startup, it also opened the infamous Dell folder on my desktop. I removed both from startup, as previously suggested..."
juliekv, Thanks for the quick reply. Well I don't know what or how but I did put the quotes in the registry and the first time it didn't take. I shut the computer down again and edited the registry again entering the quotes and this time it worked. I have another computer that I had to do the same thing to and this one worked as well. I checked my system tray and the Support Center is working in the background. I guess for others that are more proficient with system performance they may not see the value in the program however I did allow it to make some modifications to my computer and have seen some pretty good improvements in load time and application performance. So I guess I'll keep it. thanks again.
I am having the same problem with the Dell folder opening after installing the new Dell Support Center. When I add the quotaion marks in the registry, they do not stay put. Help, please. Thanks.
Thank you, Juliekv. I just did a system restore and it worked, the Dell folder doesn't open. :smileyhappy: I wonder what would happen if I install the new Dell support and don't uninstall the old one?
The only thing I could get to work was to do a system restore. Restore to the date you installed the software. Restore isn't supposed to delete any documents but I did a complete backup of my documents before I did the restore. Everything worked out fine and I didn't lose anything. I did not reinstall the Dell software.
